Crackly sound in iTunes

I've noticed that all the CD music I've imported into iTunes since February has a low grade hum/crackly sound, especially on lower notes. I thought it may be a hardware problem but then checked by ripping the same CD into my Windows Media library on same laptop and the sound is crystal clear. As a test I then added the music from Windows Media library into iTunes and got the same crackly sound which makes me think its a setting in iTunes. I don't have sound enhancer or sound check enabled which from an internet search were recommended to be turned off. Anyone got any other suggestions? Hope this is the right place to post this.
