.22lr is less powerful, but costs a lot less to shoot, while .22wmr is a more powerful and somewhat more expensive round to shoot. Both are capable of small animals like rabbits and rats, but for something like fox, .22wmr is a much better choice. It's not ideal, but is a much better choice than .22lr. For targets and such, the .22lr is great, as it's so cheap to shoot, but if you're looking to take anything up to fox size, the .22wmr is the better round for the job. What are you intending to do? Just rabbits and rats and the like, some targets in a field?

    one shoots bigger bullets:D
The lr has a much larger range of ammo availability from subsonic to normal to high velocity and hyper velocity.. Short .22 and .22bb cap's also make up part of the list but it been a good few years since i saw .22 bb caps..
Typically the speed range is from 900ft/sec to 1400ft/sec

The ..22 mag is a longer round it is also tapered ever so slightly and is unable to take the .22lr ammo. Typically it fires at speed of around 2000 ft/sec.
Some time ago a lower velocity round was in production called (i think) WRA,(win rim ammo) it shot at 1400 feet per sec or so.. Some times an ammunition manufacturer will knock out a limited batch of this lower velocity ammo, but dont hold your breath

But in terms of its hunting capability It wasn't me has hit the nail on the head..

Pretty sure 40gr is the most common bullet in both, with 32gr being reasonably widely used as well. Still, bullet sizes and weights are much the same, just case size and capacity differs.

To the OP, if you're taking them at short range, the .22lr is your man. If you want to go comfortably beyond about 80 yards, get the .22wmr and damn the cost. It'll take rabbits to about 150 yards.

Sorry about the error in thought. I should have said that one is more powerful than the other. But you all knew what i ment.;):D

Yeah, no worries, just a correction, worry not. .22wmr sounds like quite a neat calibre, wouldn't mind a hunting gun in it, but I can bash bunnies with the target rifle, so if I'm getting something, I'll get something with more poke for bigger critters. Completely off topic, but I'd love a Sako 85 Bavarian in .25-06. Anyone know if Sako do true lefty models?

Shot two rabbits at the weekend with WMR, ~95yds beautiful shot if I may say so myself :)
I was using the V-Max 34gr bullet, which I find a little too powerful for rabbits (in that it goes clean through them and often doesn't knock them instantly if it's not a head shot, anyone else find this ??)
Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to use it on a fox since I've set it properly so it'll be next year now, but I've no doubt in it's capabilities at 100yds and probably a little further, with practice. V-max is expensive-ish at E19 a box of 50. 40gr Hollow Points are around E14, might try them next for rabbits, unfortunately the zero is fairly diffferent for those (on my 452) so I'll have to reset it :(
Nice light crack out of the gun, have often fired at mags and rabbits out the back of the house and the father wouldn't even hear it inside. Mods for it are unrestricted so shouldn't be much hassle to get with proper permission.
For me it's the perfect calibre because I can't afford a big centrefire and the 22lr was a little too small, cause I'll be taking foxes too.

The .17hmr is another option but I kept away from this because I was buying a second hand firearm ( that's a relatively new calibre). And because of the bullet's smaller size I was concerned about the winds effect on point of impact, particularly for lamping.

HA I'm not going to split hairs over it but i would think that one might still manage to obtain heavier grain rounds for the .22lr than the standard 40gn.
    I saw a 60gr round for the .22lr on this forum.;):D

To be absolutely correct i would stand firm on the second answer, More powerful...........:Dfoxshooter243:D

and i may add the 22lr fires a 223 calibre bullet whereas the 22 magnum uses a 224 calibre bullet.:D

Duffys in Galway. A bit pricey I find but I pass through occasionally so saves me going out of my way.

is there much difference in the trajectory between the wmr and the .177 the wmr being that bit bigger???
i have a .22lr no problems shooting targets out to 100 yards but when in the field with rabbits shooting at various distances up hill and down things vary quite a bit :( or is it me and the shakes? thinking of going for either .177/.22wmr as i like shooting the bunnies but also want to go for fox later in the year. it would be good to zero the scope at say 80 yards and not need to compensate for closer or further shots sorry for butting in on the thread but might also prove useful :D:D

the .17hmr is somewhat flatter. If you wanted to shoot more fox though, the .22wmr is the chunkier round, kills better. Price difference is minimal for good ammo.
