Welcome to boards.ie Shutterspeed and congrats on the 40D.

Get the Sigma EF-500 DG SUPER. It has more functionality (such as manual control and wireless configuration). It is the Sigma equivalent of the Canon 580EX whereas the ST is the equivalent of the 420EX.

The added functionality is not something you will need starting out but it's nice to know it's there if you decide to delve deeper into the world of flash in due course.

I have one and it has served me well. It's not as robust (nor as expensive) as the Canon 580 EX 11 but for occasional use it does the job very well indeed. I now use it as a back -up to my Canon 580 EX 11 and as it works with the Canon wireless functionality I intend to experiment with it in multi-flash set-ups.
