I would avoid chaweng beach like the plague...
Ok for a visit on your moped but not a nice place to stay

Anywhere else;). Stayed up on the noth of the island near Ban Thai.
Beaches are a lot quiter up there. You can get around on mopeds so you can visit the Irish pubs and drunken english teanagers in Chaweng Beach if you want

Koh Phangnang and Koh Tao are much nicer. Koh Samui is full of tacky shops and prostitutes. Find a nice hotel and stay there

Thinking of skipping Koh Samui then and heading for Koh Phangnang seems to be the more advisable option. Is Koh Samui sleezy?

Parts of it are very sleazy, but other parts are fine. The beaches on Samui aren't the best though, and it is full of english holiday makers and people going for the sleaze. If you stay in the more upmarket places it's fine.

I was in Ko Samui last Sept and loved it!!! Cant rem where I stayed though, sorry! But loved it. After 2 nights out you've been to all the places there is and may tend to get bored. All I do know is the hotel room I stayed in was right on the beach - like chalets and very very very nice.

I agree, only stayed there once and was happy to get out of it. Good place to visit, eat & party, but not to stay.

My favourite location is Lami beach. I stayed here twice and found them good, free airport pickup, good beach location. Not fancy, but good quality basic.

Bo Phut is a quieter alternative to Chaweng and even Lamai beaches. Nice restaurants etc and not as sleazy as Chewang.

Lamai is a really nice place as well though. It was pretty lively at night and there was plently of room on the beach by day.

I have the name of two hotels in Lamai but not with me in work. One is slightly outside the resort but very nice hotel and the other is central and very nice chalets by the beach but just closer to the nightlife.

    I'll post the names tomorrow.
