I was looking in Wikipedia about the Arctic. Came across this map which shows the extend of ice. In the bottom left there is a map showing exceptional sightings of icebergs. There is a red dot to the SW of Kerry. Anyone have further information on this sighting?

    Thats wikipedia..
    Anyone can edit wikipedia.

They have icebergs on that map near the canary islands and off the coast of Africa.
That I find hard to believe.

If you give me a bit of time,I'll edit that map and locate one in laois for you :p

Those sitings range from 1831 to 1972 and are listed as " exceptional " , its possible that there were icebergs in exceptional cases down that far , or some drunk sailors :D

Krakatoa in 1883 led to some uncommonly cold winters in the following years , which could possibly have allowed ice to get down that far , also there were some years where unusual conditions could have led to this.

T'was sighted in 1907, and as far as I remember from reading about this a couple of years ago, it was sighted in April.

Googled it but very little information I could find!!

    http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/FAQ/FAQ_Icebergs.shtml

    Extract:

"In 1907, an iceberg was sighted about 100 nm southwest of Fastnet, Ireland"

1907 was a cold year overall, though the spring was exceptionally warm and sunny!!

    Hope this helps..:o
