Help with P2P S/W on my network

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find what I need using the search function, so apologies if it's been done to death. Anyway, I've never been able to properly set up P2P S/W on my network, which consists of:

    1. Netopia 3341 ADSL Modem (Eircom is the ISP). The LAN address for this is the standard 192.168.1.254.

    2. I connect the above to a 3Com 11g Wireless Cable/DSL router, and all PC's/laptops in the house connect wireless to the net. The ethernet side of the router is set up to be automatically allocated an IP address. The LAN side has an IP address of 192.168.0.1, and is configured as a DHCP server.

This works fine for normal net access, but I've never been able to set up any P2P S/W. The S/W can never 'see' the outside world. I've tried loads of options like security on the modem/router, and port forwarding but I never can get it right.

This should be easy to do, right? Or what changes do I need to make in the set-up to make it easier?
