Which one would you recommend folks?

Both have received good reviews. Leaning towards the Canon, but the Sigma is €120 cheaper.

Canon & Nikon optics always get better reviews than the 3rd party lenses. I've owned a couple of Sigma EX lenses in the past and it's hard to find fault with them. If you're a top of the line Pro then the Canon is for you, if you're like me (major enthusiast) then buy the Sigma and take the bird out for dinner with the difference.

or if you're an enthusiast like me buy the more expensive canon lens and let the bird take you out for dinner cos you'll be broke after buying it! :D

I have and love the Sigma but I haven't used the Canon. iirc the Canon 10-22 is EF-S which may be an issue for resale or if you upgrade to a full frame.

The Sigma is not full frame either so they're pretty much the same in that respect :) I have it in Nikon flavour. Love it. The Nikon equivlent (12-24) costs nearly twice as much as the Sigma which really made it a no-brainer for me, but with the Canon alternative being so close in price I would consider going for that.

i'm about as close to a top of the line Pro as the North Pole is to the South:D Only starting out, but I've always liked landscape shots so would like to try them. I realise there's a huge debate about EF vs EF-S, but I'll be holding onto my 450D for a good while yet. Thanks for the advice folks.:)

Dunno if it would be that good for landscapes, there's quite a bit of distortion on the canon. Although at 22mm it's not that bad really. I guess if it's all far away then it won't matter so much.
All the water shots on my flickr are taken with the Canon if you want to see some examples.
    I love it.

One vote for the Sigma ... don't know much about the Canon, but the Sigma is very good image quality wise stepped down to f7.1 to f8, thats how i use it. Negligible chromatic abberation and sharp all over .... go to my flickr and i have a set just with images i have taken with this lens ... :pac::pac:

Telephoto lenses are also great for landscapes!
Maybe get the Sigma and put the extra cash towards a good tele?

I was in a dilemma a while back about getting this canon or going for a sigma 12-20 (I think). At the the time I found the canon a better lens and also less bulky and much lighter and easier to use. Upgrading to a 5D now so have to sell my canon but if I had bought the sigma I could have still used it when I upgrade. So consider the fact you may have to get rid of the lens if you upgrade to full frame in the future. I'd say you should go into a shop with your camera and try both lenses out and get a better idea that way.

    Update:

Ended up going for a Tokina 12-24mm lens like this one

Thanks to everyone for all the advice, assistance, and courtesy shown towards a beginner. I have to say the shots linked to in some of the posts above are just outstanding. It's hard to believe that some of the people concerned are just hobbyists. They would put some of the Pros (that I've seen) to shame. Well done.
