NTL digital irritation

All in all I quite like the NTL digital - and given that it's the only thing available where I am, it's streets above the others.

However - I have one major major complaint, something that is irritating me like nothing else.

That is that the unit does not save your record memos. What this means is

    - power failure = lose all your record memos
    - turn off the machine = lose your record memos
    - try to conserve energy by switching to standby mode = lose your record memos

    and my personal favourite

    - NTL initiated software upgrade that you cannot opt out of or switch off = lose all your record memos.

I ask, what is the point???? I spent a good hour yesterday plugging in all the shows that I want to record for a week. This morning I turned on the telly to find that there was a software update going on. If I hadn't seen that screen I wouldn't have known about the update and would thus have not known that all my record memos were gone.

As it is, a few weeks ago I went away for a few days, safe in the knowledge that I had everything programmed in and my flatmate has been trained (ia tantrum) to never switch off the box, only to find that I'd only had a couple of days before a software update wiped everything and I'd missed a lot of the shows that I really really wanted to watch.

I believe that SKY does not do this, but I'm not sure - I do know that this is a deal breaker for me and as soon as another service is available I'll switch happily.

Anyone found a way around this yet?

It must be a problem with your box. Mine retains all it's reminders and record memos when put in standby at least. I rarely power it off completely, so don't know for sure whether it retains them then, but I can't imagine it would do that by design. I can only suggest you get on to UPC about it.

My one seems fine as well. I often power off the box, with the wall switch and it is fine. I dont unplug the cable though.

Have noticed that when i unsubscribe from sky sports, I could not watch stuff i had recorded from sky sports.

Are you talking about the normal set-top box or the DVR?

And they are perfectly entitled to do what they want to do with their equipment.
Remember you're only renting it,you don't own it.

I don't lose any memos either when it's powered down.
The manual(available online) clearly states that even if the box is in standby it'll record scheduled recordings.
What you've described are not normal features of the box, quite the opposite.
You have problems with the box itself. Contact UPC.

#24 in the FAQ section of the manual holds the answer.
