Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD orange engine light comes on intermittently?

A friend of mine owns a 2002 Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD manual gearbox. He's had problems in the past with the orange light on the dash coming on, i.e the engine symbol. It seems the car goes into "limp mode" where it won't let you pass 50 mph or so. He took it back to the dealer where they "rectified the fault" (I'm guessing by plugging it in and clearing the fault). This is quite dangerous especially overtaking, when suddenly the engine has normal power then this light comes on and there's a big loss in acceleration. He seems to have lost faith in the dealership, when on one occasion he needed a new part. They ordered the part, but told him they hadn't time to fit it, can you believe this? It was a rubber hose for the turbo which he fitted himself. Does anyone know of any independent Saab specialists out there who you could recommend? My buddy lives in the west so anyone near Galway would be great. Thanks

have the same problem with my 06 octavia 1.9 td ,have had it back twice to garage . they said it could be a blockage going to turbo and put a tin of luquid in to tank to clear.a day later same problem ,so im waiting on a call from them to take car in again.had a seat alhambra a few years ago .1.9 td and it had the same problem.after a lot of hassle with garage i got a new turbo .thats wat i think could be ur problem

    is a turbo pipe
they rub small holes in themselves
dosent need a sab specialist its a gm engine y22se or summit
the vaxhaull/opel people are good and will sort him out

    Thanks for your replies
My mate had the turbo replaced only about 6 months ago, but he's also replaced the rubber hoses a few times, before the turbo packed in, so this obviously must be a fault. Will look into finding out more about this model engine from GM.

    Hi,

Love this old 2.2 Saab. I have a 98. Bought an 03 2.0t but gave it to my wife (the 2.2 diesel is a better car to drive and build quality). Anyway........I've had this issue and have researched it a lot. The most common cause is a dirty MAF (Mass Airflow Meter). There are articles on saabcentral which will show you how to clean this using electrical contact cleaner. The next thing which may be of issue is the Boost Pressure Solenoid (one of the gates may be stuck or faulty). I would recommend performing the first procedure and then get the read done before replacing the BPV. Unfortunately the 2.2 has to be read by a TEK 2 so you will have to bring it to a saab dealer. You can however get a reading done (about 60 euros) without having to ACTUALLY get the work done there.

    Hope this helps,
    Stephen:)

This thread is nearly a year old, I'm sure the OP is well sorted by now. :)

Same here I also have a TiD 2.2 and the orange engine management light came on and there was a loss of power (the turbo did not appear to kick in)
and then it died. To get it repaired and service cost me €540 and now 6 months later (only 2km done since) and guess what the engine management light is back on! :(

Last time they said they replaced an O2 sensor or a solenoid valve depends on wether you believe the receptionist or the bill

    Anyone got any other ideas?

Have they tried to run a diagnostic on the car ? How often would the orange light come on

Nope have to take it to a dealer and this time not a main dealer.
The orange light has been coming on and off and I brought it to a non saab dealer and they found nothing in the logs. It then broke down no warning and since then it came one twice and went off with no loss of power.
Last week the turbo stopped coming and the light immediately went on and has only go off for 30 secs since (I have only driven about 5km since)
Strange thought the turbo appears to be working again

    any ideas

Friend had a similar problem ... it turned out to be the solenoid -one got stuck causing it not to go above 50 .

Am I the only one that thinks this is an toss pot answer at best? (OP reporting accuracy accepted)

IMHO, the Saab 2.2 diesel has to be the roughest oil burner bar none...

... Gives the VAG 90 BHP a bit of breathing room.

Yes that what it was last time and the replacement may not have lasted 2000km. Is it just me or should I go back am start screaming at the garage?

Unlike considering the last 2 incidents (both occur when I was getting the solenoid fixed)

Incident 1: Phone call from Saab main dealer,
Saab: Your car is fixed sir
    Me: Excellent what was wrong
    Saab: A valve was gone
Me: How much will it cost
Saab: Its free as its covered under warranty
Me: OK great (that strange I did not realise Saab warranties cover imported cars)
Ok I will pick it up first thing tomorrow
    Next day....

Me: Hi I am here to pick up my car its XXXXXX
Saab: goes off and comes back 2 minutes later
    Sorry sir its not ready
    Me: Why not?
Saab: It will be two days
    ~~~~~~~~
    I wont bore you with the dribble
    ~~~~~~~~
Me: I am expected in Sandyford how am I supposed to get there?
    Saab: Smiles and walks off

Incident 1: Phone call from Saab main dealer,
Saab 1: Our engineer want to talk to you about your car service
    Me: Ok put him on
Saab Eng: I cant find your nut for unlocking the wheel nuts
    Me: It in the boot
    Saab Eng: I looked there
    Me: Its there
Saab Eng: (annoyed) Well its not there I am looking again and its not there
Me: It might have got knocked about as I moved stuff to tow the car in, dont you have one yourselves as thats a Saab part
Saab Eng: (verbally abusive) No we dont, why dont you come up here and find it for me if you think its in the car
Me: I'm in Sandyford the other side of town
Saab Eng: Its ok I found it

That two incidents of customer service

Some say yes but I found a garage that say they have a reader, I will want to see it in action...

Seriously if its a solenoid valve again after 2000km what should I do with the Saab dealer?
