Hi, am just about to upgrade a dell inspiron laptop with new ram. Its pc2 5300 (pc4200)

It says in the dell manual/website that it takes 2gb max, but im wondering will it recognise 4gb? (2x2gb) Want to find out before i buy.

    Thanks, Design_Dude

    Unless you've a 64bit operating system....then no, it's won't recognise or utilise the 4GB. Personally, i'd go for 2GB of faster ram;)

 Rubbish, faster ran will still run at the same speed as what you got, You've not got any options to overclock it and it will only run at the speeds that the mobo allows. If Dell say 2Gb, then thats all the mobo supports

Yea, prob true, but i find with a lot of things they can accomadate higher, eg, my phone says it can support max 1gb m2 card, yet a 4gb m2 is running perfectly in it. Thought it migth be the same for this maybe?

Assuming his old ram is 2x 512mb of pc4200...then yes, he'd be better off getting 2GB of PC5300?

You'd barely notice any difference in going from pc4200 to pc5300 ram but you would notice a big difference going from 1Gb to 2Gb

pc2 5300 runs at the same speed as pc 4200, 667mhz.

i no what you meen with your phone that is prob because when your phone was made 1 gig was the bigest that was out or new fireware for the phone now allows it to take more

As for the laptop the most it will take is 2 gig
