An Irish Grand Prix circuit?

I think something like this in Ireland would be great. Build it around the Cork City Sports, a few other events added in around it. The Kerry lads have their event around same time too and something in Dublin as well maybe and planned and played out better than the ill fated Dublin International Games. The nordies could rustle up an international/national event too and there seems to be a good appetite for an annual event in Greystones. Would bring on the domestic scene a lot and give sub-international athletes good regular competition against our own top athletes and some overseas athletes too but there wouldn't be a requirement for them at all events. The calibre of athletes Cork get is really, really good and bringing those athletes in can be easy enough though. I'm fully aware that the logistics, finance etc for these events can be massive but in an ideal world I think it would go a long way to revitalising the sport at club and grassroots level. It wouldn't need to be at the level of the Finnish example.

Yep, one good strong track/field event should be possible for each region to organise a year.. Athenry AC did one in Galway two years ago, it does need a number of clubs in an area to dig in, this one had A/B races , great motivation for local club runners and great to see the top lads in full flight...

It would be a most welcome development, indeed. Unfortunately, I think the Riocht International isn't being run this year, as per the AAI report released recently, but it should be back next year.

I'm still wondering how our capital city can't pull together a major Grand Prix; it's shocking. They should create a Grand Prix with the Morton Mile as the blue riband event. As was said previously, the finance to put on a top Grand Prix must be ginormous, but I'd imagine if there was a real desire to put one on, finance wouldn't be too hard to come by.

Well, it looks like my whining over the lack of a proper international Grand Prix in Dublin can finally be put to rest!

The Morton Memorial this year will have a solid international programme as well as an extensive domestic programme.

The international events are as follows:

    Men

100m, 400m, Morton Mile, High Jump

    Women

    100m, 400m, 3000 m, 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Hammer

It would be fitting if they could land Alan Webb to appear in the mile, given that he's the current U.S middle-distance star, as well as his exploits last year. Maybe he could have another pop at the record!

It's good to see events such as the Pole Vault included in the programme as well.
