Ecocabs seeks access to St Stephen's Green
    Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:26

Dublin operators of the muscle powered tricycles called Ecocabs want access through areas such as St Stephen's Green to improve their service.

In a submission to Dublin City Council's Transport Committee the company says it will also need more sponsorship to expand their free service.

Ecocabs rely on advertising to pay for the cost of offering free rides to commuters, shoppers and tourists in the city centre.

They have 10 tricycles at eight different locations and will carry members of the public up to 2km.

City councillors were told that the number of Ecocabs has more than doubled since its launch last year and now carries 2,000 passengers per week from April to December.

Why not just let taxis and busses through the green also?

Carrying 285 people a day and inconveniencing thousands who use Taxis and Buses, in my opinion these Ecocabs should only be allowed in areas like Stephens Green and shouldn't be allowed use the bus lanes, I've seen big tailbacks behind them.

I would agree ... it would be the lesser evil to allow eco cabs some sort of route through Stephens green. Buses can't overtake them when they use the Stephens green bus lane.

I can see both sides of this argument. However, I think any initiative that would mean more traffic of any kind in the Green park ought to be discouraged.

Just to clear this up, this article was taken slightly out of context.
Ecocabs were in discussions with the director of transport services about access/use of certain areas in town- all of which to facilitate shorter and more convenient journeys. Stephen's Green was suggested as a way of getting out to Leeson street area with minimum disruption to traffic and also as part of a designated tourist sightseeing route. It was merely one point mentioned in a discussion on strategy for improving and expanding the service.
