New LUAS bridge to ease traffic
    Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:06

A new LUAS bridge is to be used to ease traffic disruption in Dublin city centre during the construction of the Metro North and the interconnector.

Dublin City Council's Director of Traffic Michael Philips said the bridge to be built for LUAS line BX is 'urgently needed' to keep buses moving when works start in 2010.

He said an implementation group has been set up using engineers who worked on the Port Tunnel to oversee works by the Rail Procurement Agency and Iarnród Eireann.

Mr Philips said they will advise on construction methods which he said is an evolving situation and will see St Stephen's Green become 'Grand Central Station'.

He said business groups are worried about the five years of disruption they face because of their experience during the last LUAS works which only lasted 18 months.

Mr Philips confirmed to a meeting of the council's transport committee this evening that construction of a bridge for LUAS BX linking Hawkins Street on the southside with Hawkins Street on the northside will go ahead.

It is planned to have it ready when the dig starts for a new Metro North station on O'Connell bridge.

But apart from enabling works construction of the LUAS BX which will link the Red and Green lines will not begin until the metro is completed in 2013.

Mr Philips said the council are working with the utility companies to warn them that major works on gas, water and electricity lines will not be possible for five years after transport works start.

It was confirmed to councillors that private cars face bans or restrictions in College Green, Westmoreland St and O'Connell St.
And that work on the Arnotts development will be going on at the same time as metro and interconnector works.

I think Arnotts will be back. It would meet up with Marlborough Street on Eden Quay.

They only rejected around a dozen of the proposals, they rest were fine.

The rejected items will be rehashed.

I'm happy to hear that, overall the Arnotts development is very positive for the north side of the city, it will help rejuvenate this part of the city and will hopefully spur redevelopment all along O'Connell St., hopefully turning it into the excellent shopping street that it has the potential to be.

The area around Clerys and bloody Dr Quirkys also need to be redeveloped, with the Luas BX and Metro passing through the area, O'Connell St could be really opened up to becoming the number one shopping Street.

Yeh I hate Dr Quirkys how did they get planning permission for that! Hopefully they will demolish it when building new shopping centre in the old capital building.

Quirke owns a good proportion of the buildings in and around his cesspit amusement arcade, including all the run down buildings to the rear along Moore St. He left them to rot to make sure he got permission to develop it all.

god  are they mad to use these bunch of jokers again when the city council is fighting tool and nail to get money out of them for a bad job on the port tunnell looks like metro in 2115 if these engineers design and bulid it

I would presume they mean the engineers who worked on the design and procurement stages, not the Irishenco engineers involved in building it.

This carry on makes me sick and it's going on all over the country. Outside Dublin if you ever notice a rotten building in the middle of an otherwise nice rural town chances are some local gombeen has the lease of the building from an in-bred, aristocratic toff "over on the mainland" and he is letting the building decay so when time comes to pay for it he'll get a discount as the building is in bits. There should be laws against this kind of thing.

Back on topic. I am amazed to see this bridge still being talked about. Not that I have a problem with it, but the Government seemed to have been left cold with the whole Luas Bx saga.

Whether its ever used for a luas is another matter. At the moment the whole thing is just an orgasmic get together for engineers, planners and a few politicians who are interested.

Yes I know what you mean.

One half of Monasterevin is owned by someone like this who has decided that the place looks far better crumbling to bits than actually selling out to someone who might rebuild it.

wow, I thought they were taking the mickey with that BX loop route, didn't think they'd seriously consider BUILDING it.

Don't worry, what the article really says is that a new bridge is being built to take traffic of O'Connell St during metro construction and it might be used for Luas if they ever decided to build it sometime after Metro is completed.

Yea - who'd have thought anyone might want to be able to get between the two lines.

What the article is saying (to my horror) is that "construction of the LUAS BX which will link the Red and Green lines will not begin until the metro is completed in 2013". Oh sweet jesus. Surely this can't be right - so BX will be ready by 2017? There'll be 9 years of disruption to the city centre?

BX will never happen (not in the form proposed anyway), even if they do build this bridge.

you ain't seen the half of it... I've been telling you all about this upheaval but no-one's listening !

Is there anything specifically wrong? There seems to be loads of work going on down there, how can it take another 2 years?
