Whats the point? Isn't it a bit like snooker on the radio. This is the blurb on 2fm.ie

"Gerry broadcasts from Walt Disney World in Florida and it's fun fun fun all the way...Gerry will be describing the rides and thrills of the Magical Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and the Hollywood Studios"

Ooh i cant wait to hear those rides being described. Free junket.

Has anyone heard the Gerry Ryan show this week, its fantastic. He's in Florida and he actually describes the rides and attractions in Disney world.
Keep up the good work Gerry.

By sheer cooincidence I caught some of this this morning (not a morning radio person at all)....and it was Mr Ryan doing what only Mr Ryan can do; yep, you've guessed it...eating on air. He flew 4K miles to tell us what the food tasted like (and what it sounded like)...also, the sound quality on the OB was laughable....if the're going to go to the trouble of sending the fat git to on a free holiday, couldn't they at least have arranged for a sound engineer to do some tweaking? Lazy isn't the word.

    LOL, funny post Wertz.

However, which one of us wouldn't go on the junket if we were asked?

I reckon the sound quality is more to do with the codec selected on the ISDN box.

Ah but you see the sound engineer was eating too. So he was too busy!

He brought his children with him? That is a joke.

Is it really our tax money that is paying for this? 2FM receives no license fee money.

I don't think he brought his kids with him. He just keeps talking about how much they would love this and that, and he mentions them a lot.

Get real folks...RTE are milking the taxpayer bigtime.

Ok don't get too excited, they do good things too,but don't ever lose sight of the fact that we,thats us, you and me missus ,who are paying for their junkets, pensions, conditions and ancillary stuff.

Forget about 2FM and all that shooite.

Don't let anyone talk you down on that one, it's true, you are paying and you are entitled to an opinion.

Good aul Flutter, even if the argument has been shot to pieces before, you'll still spout it out all the same.

Aaah Deemer... sorry to disappoint you, but the argument has not been shot down, not by a long long chalk.:D

Can you explain to the plain people of Ireland why marion Finucane gets 460k to do 4 hrs radio ,give or take, and holidays June to September.

If you think thats good use of taxpayers money, well fair dues to you.

If the Bank of Ireland or the AIB make a few billion should the person who deals with you at the counter be paid to reflect that??

Or should market forces and common sense dictate remuneration??

So either way it's a 3 hours a day week long advert for Disney .Yep top impartial and informative radio from our national broadcaster. Brilliant.

I wonder who is sponsoring it Estella???

That doesn't come out of the 2FM budget either, I suppose.

I'd say disney funded the trip, and possibly part funded by the Folrida tourist board, it is the norm for these type of trips to be funded by travel companies and local tourist boards.

2fm don't draw directly form the license fee, we all agree on that. G Ryan more than offsets his salary with the advertising the show pulls in.

But there are shared resources like IT, engineering and maybe news that are taken from the central RTE pool that are paid by the license fee.

That's it exactly, Bond-007. (Thought that was obvious, tbh, FlutterinBantam...)

It may be a waste of money, I'm not arguing that..- it's just not a waste of public/TV License money, which reduces our right to give out about it in the context of "wasting taxpayers money" to ... well, to practically zero.

2FM pay for their transmission costs and news, and their profit is directed towards Radio 1.

    As mentioned here.
    DMC wrote: »
Remember that the station started in 1979, hardly any startup costs would appear on the books now. They are in the same outhouse in Montrose. And if it continues to make a profit, those costs are long paid for. Listed in the Annual Report is also transmission costs to RTÉ NL specifically for 2FM (€1.4m, pg 54) and also, 2FM pay the newsroom for the news, they don't get it as a freebie (pg 47).

Think of it this way. Colm and Jim Jim, Rick O'Shea, Larry Gogan and (excluding TV work) Gerry Ryan and all the other DJ's on 2FM cost the licence fee payer diddly squat, nada, not a bean. Their income in advertising alone makes 2FM help other parts of RTÉ's PSB programming.

It was....in about 6 threads over 2years on this forum.

Was wondering why he was banging on about that at this stage and needed confirmation. He seemed to think it was a major disclosure.

I also thought it was obvious that the national broadcaster should not put itself in the hands of commercial interests as it is doing with Ryan in Florida.

    Objectivity me hairy arse!!!!

For sale to the highest bidder and to hell with objectivity..

lol you obviously haven't been watching the late late show the last decade (sponsored by car companies, banks and whoever's willing to put up a holiday prize) or been watching Irish TV in general...RTÉ is so far into the pockets of big business it's finding lint...

Eventually we will all grow up and see that ryan is 'of the eighties' and would not survive a minute in the real 'work-for-a-livin' world. Keep it up RTE your days are numbered.

The days of holding on to the likes of ryan, kenny etc and paying them outrageous sums (of our money) so they won't defect to the 'real-world' of radio/television is a dying trend. No commercial organisation would succeed on this basis. What's keeping RTE afloat is 'tax-payers' money and the people propagating this system are 'civil-servants' need I say anymore ? ;)

DMC will be along with a pie chart to show that all 2FM jocks are paid out of the ad revenue.

I would agree that the stellar salaries that the likes of Kenny and Ryan will not be received by their successors, but who ever they are will still be amongst the highest paid in TV and Radio, regardless.

    And yet, and yet.

The likes of Kenny and Ryan earn so much advertising revenue for RTÉ, that their wages wouldn't be paid out of the licence fee, along with all 2FM staff.

You could do the maths from the rate cards and comparing them to their salaries.

2fm makes enough money COMMERCIALLY to run itself. It IS NOT FUNDED by the taxpayer. IT IS FUNDED BY COMMERCIAL INCOME. IT is a "Stand Alone".

Not that it had to be repeated again given that DMC and Bond have already mentioned it several times in this thread and you have chosen to ignore it and still type a load of ill informed drivel.

Any idea what determines the value of a presenter ?

Do you have any idea what attracts advertisers ?

Any idea what the value of big advertising is worth ?

If you knew the answer to these questions perhaps you wouldnt be ranting!

We know all that!! That is not the issue.

Given the demographic of Irish broadcasting, given the current situation,RTE,with the footprint and commercial recognition it has, could put any half decent punter into the 0900-1200 "slot" and rake in the money.

The issue here is value for money.Do Dublin Bus pay their drivers on the basis of money taken in on each route???.We are talking total commercial package here, not individuals who happen to be on the prime slots.
Now I understand that certain talent must be recognised and rewarded, and no doubt RYan and especially Kenny have some talent, but to say they deserve their salaries on the basis of ad revenue pulled in is quite frankly a load of bollox.

Where are you going to get the class of listener with the spending power in Ireland but RTE!!!
Jaysus its like shooting fish in a barrel, and the ad agencies know it but have little or no other option.

We are not all idiots here:mad:
