The Toenail Question..

Apologies if this goes against the whole "Don't ask us, go to a doctor" thing but I'm after an experienced runners opinion rather than a doctors.

I've been running for quite a while and often heard of people losing toenails. I've never experienced anything like this... until now. I played football a couple of days after the connemara Ultra and took a kick on my foot. Toenails were a bit road-weary already, but looks like the big one is about to come off.

I've a couple of other races coming up and I'm just wondering is this going to cause me to have to pull out? Does it hurt like hell and is there anything you should do to prevent in-growing toenails etc when running?

    Any advice would be appreciated...

no it won't hurt like hell, no it won't put you out of upcoming races but you might not be wearing those strappy sandals for a couple of months! Depending on how the nail comes off, keep an eye that it doesn't get infected but otherwise you should be ok.

Thanks for the quick response. I think it's been on the way for a while and last week was just the final straw so hopefully some healing has been going on in the background making for a clean break!

    Cheers..

Do they grow back? I'm feeling faint even thinking about this.

I know... I'm not normally squeamish at all, but for some reason the thought of this coming off is giving me the heeby-geebies!

Went for a swim earlier and could feel it start to flap but managed to pretend it wasn't happening!

mostly yes but if you've damaged the toenail bed they may not grow back the same shape I have a few pictures of dodgy toenails but my favourite (ahem) foot picture is this one (not for the squeemish) http://www.rwforumites.co.uk/images/200Rob-Carr-blisters.jpg
