Read the Macro section here and various other reviews, final words anyone b4 I order this?
Tis will be my 1st Macro and I need 1:1 for what I want to photo.......
Question also how far is the distance I can get in laymans terms?
Basically I want to photograph some Seagulls from my balcony, they come quite close when we throw down food.
    I already own the 50mm 1.4 and 70-200 Canon.
    All tips/help muchly appreciated.

It's a superb lens, I look for any excuse to use it.

Now your question about distance, I think you may be confusing distance with magnification. The reason that macro lenses go to 1:1 is that they can be focused very closely to the subject. For the Canon 100mm this is around 30cm away. As this is the distance from the subject to the film/sensor plane, in practice the front of the lens will be 10-12cm away from the subject. Frankly, I wouldn't want to be that close to the business end of a seagull! To sum up, if you're say 2m away from the subject, the image recorded with the 100mm macro will be exactly the same size as the 70-200mm zoomed to 100mm

That said, in practice, for something the size of a seagull you won't have to go that close to fill the frame, though you'd still be better off with a bit more distance and the long end of your 70-200 I reckon.

For anything without a sharp beak and bad attitude, and that (from my perspective anyway) doesn't move a lot, the 100mm is a cracking lens.

I got this lens around 3 weeks ago. Perfectly happy with it - sharp, fast & well built.

Too many lenses? Is there such a thing?? :D

I must say, like you, I have this lens. It is a brilliant lens, great for portraits and wonderful macro. I also don't make enough use of it.

I bought my 8th lens yesterday....
    70-200L IS f4
Far lighter than the 2.8 version and it fits into my Camera bag too!
2 small things I was slightly disappointed with were the focus ring is looser than any other lens I own and also the macro capabilities (1.2)....You cannot take a photo of something unless it's back a bit, for instance the person sitting next to me in the pub had to move back about 3-4 persons width before the picture would take.

I thought you would have gone with the 24-70L Janer? minimum focusing distance is a bit of a pain with some of the lenses but with the 70-200 at least you can zoom in

24-70L I've given much though too but in the end the 24-105L IS better suits my needs, it does gig photography and it has IS and the better reach, it's also lighter!
