im off to america for the summer and thinking about bringing my dslr. Problem is I need to store possibly thousands of photos and do not intend on bringing my laptop (camera is bulky enough). Can anyone reccommend one of these?

I got myself a vosonic last year, added bonus being that I can take a load of videos on it to watch on the flight as well.

I got a Archos Gmini 400 back in 2003 which has CP reader (does others with adapters) and had a 20GB drive, never had issues with it and still use it till this day

    this might be useful

I bought the Canon M80. It reads CF and SD cards. Dead handy, and uses the same battery as the 20/30/40D.

    I have 2 now
I've replaced the old one because the battery wasn't holding much charge
and the replacement came with remote control and video output
got them on ebay for very cheap, I had to buy a disk separately but no big deal (120 gb for €50 in komplett)

I have a JOBO Giga One ULTRA 40GB. No image review options and you just plug your memory card into the drive and press the copy button. Simple as that.

The downside to that is you don't know if there's any image corruption or other problems until you get to a PC to review your images. I haven't had any problems of that nature, but have read reports somewhere that it can happen.

Bought mine from a company in Germany called 24Traders, who were by far the cheapest I could find.

    Try these http://www.archos.com/?country=ie&lang=en&culture=ie-en&lang_temp=

There's a good range for different needs, I got the AV500 which acts as a USB host so I can transfer files to it for backup. I believe the 605 series support raw files so you can view them too.

And they make great video players for the flight over.

Another thumbs up for the jobo 40gb (took mine when I went Storm Chasing in middle America) ....guess it all depends on what you want - some of the more advanced products out there such as the epson and canon equivalents tend to have a large colour screen to view the pics taken and some even have video playback..etc - but all costs money. I decide against this and simply used mine to store for retrieval at later date. I did bring a laptop and backed up the saved stuff in the hotel every evening (enabling me to check all was coorect)- ultimately I had all my pics on the Jobo and Laptop - better to be safe than sorry! (in spite of all my efforts was unable to use up the 40GB so didn;t have the prob of running out of space - I got in the habit of removing the really poor pics in advance of copying most of the time.

I would also say I took 5 x 2GB cards and rotated them so usually didn;t have to delete them until the evening - this meant I could double check the backup in advance of wiping original files. (Thought it was cheaper buying a few more memory cards than doing the trip again....I did say I like to be safe rather than sorry!)

Search for "hyperdrive". I've 2 and they are superb. They use 4AA batteries, and when plugged in to the car or mains, they re-change te batteries. you can even re-charge batteries for use in a flash.

    Merv.
