bit of trouble the other day at the setanta cup match, gadai used dog units, mounted unit and riot squad as well as uniform gardai to disperse the crowd, seems it was handled quite well. just wondering is membership of the riot squad open to all members or specific units only?

AFAIK,uniform make up the POU's..and I think you can apply once you have a minimum of 3 years service..but the Gardai here on boards will clarify that!
Are the Public Order Unit's made up of uniformed personnel?Isn't there 1 per region?

The Garda's Public Order Units are drawn from rank and file uniform who volunteer and pass fitness etc. Members of specialist units are ineligible as POU duty may interfere with their specialist duties. The setup is along UK Police PSU lines with a skipper and 6 officers forming a squad, the POU instructors themselves having been trained by PSNI and GMP (Greater Manchester Police).

Storm in a tea cup the other night. Four drunks arrested. Looking at the front page of the Hearald last night, one would have thought that the city was under siege. Shameful sensationalism.

I stopped reading after the first four words. They also described the incident as 'sectarian rioting'.

Maybe they were on scene, but they were not deployed, which is what you claimed. How would the horses have gotten into the ground? Either they were little shetland ponies or the worlds biggest turnstiles....

not in the stadium but in the surrounding streets, and apparently a group of local youths who werernt at the game were dispersed by gardai, and if your not going toeven bother reading it why try and put up an argument, andif they were there surely it means they were deployed, just because they didnt beat the sh1t out of them doesnt mean they werent deployed!

    Officer,

You have gone from a 'soccer riot' in the title, to claiming that the riot squad, horses and dogs were used to move local youths at the end.

    you are simply wrong.

the only officers who saw any action on Monday night were good old fashioned dayglo jacket wearing Gardai. Sorry to dissapoint, but there was a minor fracas when two Linfield fans were removed for trying to get in on forged tickets and when a small gang of local youngfellas were moved on after the game.

you are using the evening herald to back up an argument. scraping the barrell a bit?

there has been enough damage as a result of the Indo/Herald coverage (which I believe is in front of the press council) without the Gardai deciding amongst themselves that this was a riot that required specialist units and behaving accordingly aggressively in future.

By all means, ask away about the POU and how to apply. But can you tone down the vitriol in relation to the incident?

point taken on the first post and changed.the other units were deployed but it was uniforms who moved them on, apologies all the same. also are you saying the gardai over-reacted in their approach?

The opposite. From what I can gather the cops handled this situation well, in an understated and unobtrusive manner - which unfortunatly is not something that can generally be said about how they handle other volatile football fixtures.

Maybe you should try policing a 'volatile football fixture' and see how easy it is, before you go making underhanded generalisations.

    Troll elsewhere.

there is no trolling about it. I complemented the Gardai on how they handled Monday, I'm sure they are as dissapointed as anyone with the Indo/Herald dirge that implied they didn't have control of the event. I have been to derby games all over the world, some of which are exceptionally violent affairs, and how they have been policed.

The Gardai have only in the last two years gotten any sort of handle on the Dublin derby. And they would be the first to admit it.
