My laptop gave up last summer and there is a lot of stuff on it that I would like to take of the hard drive. Im just wondering how I would do this.

Is there anyway of taking the hard drive out of my old laptop and running it like an external hard drive on my new laptop.

Any advise would be much appreciated as I have a lot of photos and videos that I would like to reteive.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, buy your self and external hard drive enclosure (~€30) and you will be good to go.

Is there any particular type. Does it matter what type of laptop it is?

Your drive should be a 2.5". It'll either be SATA or IDE - a lot of enclosures will support both.
Take the latop apart and take the drive into a computer shop they can advise

HDD is very accessible in most if not all laptops. It should be under panel engraved with an icon that looks like either 3 stacked discs or a disc enclosed by a square. PMan is otherwise bang on.

You can identify yourself wether it is a SATA or IDE interface with a quick search on wikipeda: the IDE will have quite a few exposed pins; the SATA will be a quite small connector: smaller than USB Standard.

you can get usb to 2.5 cable, slightly cheaper than enclosure, i presume its ide hd,if its sata you,ll need usb to sata cable,or usb sata enclosure.theres usb to sat/ide cables too. post model no eg sony viao 220lx.google upgrading / insert your laptop name model/ hard drive.

If it's a sata drive you can bang it straight into a desktop....providing that the desktop has a free sata and power connection? :)
