The Sigma is perfect. Its so handy that you can zoom back to especially in the sports I use it for. I use it in conjuction with a 70-200 f2.8IS on a 5d to give a good working range between the two.

Keith covered a Dublin Game with me under the floodlights using the Sigma 120-300mm.

    Here's his shots: http://flickr.com/photos/keithjack/sets/72157603879819953/

Think it was his time shooting GAA as well.

Ask around the various clubs and boards about 2nd hand ones of these. Quite a few folks get them, and then look at changing to the canon 300.

I did that, an I'm pretty sure some others did too.

I only changed as I wanted to use a 1.4 extender, and the canon behaves way better with the extender than the sigma, and also the IS is bloody handy for those dark evenings when your down to 1/320. Even with the monopod. the IS is super when doing wildlife out the car window (think safari).

but on regular 300mm shots, it's a good lens. and being able to zoom is an advantage, but I found I was shoooting 95% at 300mm.
