REQ Help OpenOffice on Leopard

    Hi,

I have MacBook, came with Leopard 10.5.2 preloaded.

I loaded OpenOffice ver 2.3 and it worked using X11 ver 1.1 I think. (X11 ver 1.1 was preinstalled)
I loaded "The Gimp", the installation asked me to install X11 ver 2.2.0.1 for it to run properly. I did.

Now OOver 2.3 or OOver 2.4 won't load at all, I double click, it tries, but it won't ever open, however I also have to "force quit" OO.

I deleted the program and re-installed OO, each version. Still it won't work?

    I'm a new user of Mac's also.

    All help would be appreciated.

As with all things UNIX you need to check your logs. They are cryptic but it is really the only accurate record of failures. Open the console application in the utilities folder and select 'logs' in top left corner. Expand the various levels and look for 'crashreporter'. Under this level there should be an Open Office crash log. You can also get to logs by going to Users-->'user name'-->Library-->Logs.

    Hi muggyog

I went into Users-->'user name'-->Library-->Log--.> and there was an OpenoOffice.log file this is the last few entries

    2008-04-16 16:58:49 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org
    2008-04-16 17:08:51 (Scripts/main) Open file: '/Users/username/Documents/Gard.odt'
    2008-04-16 17:46:53 (scripts/PostInstall) Setting: no system fonts
    2008-04-16 17:46:53 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org
    2008-04-16 17:53:10 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org
    2008-04-16 18:05:37 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org
    2008-04-16 22:57:29 (scripts/PostInstall) Setting: no system fonts
    2008-04-16 22:57:29 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org
    2008-04-16 22:58:04 (scripts/PostInstall) Setting: no system fonts
    2008-04-16 22:58:04 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org
    2008-04-17 01:55:26 (scripts/PostInstall) Setting: no system fonts
    2008-04-17 01:55:26 (Scripts/main) Running OpenOffice.org"

Where is says "Setting: no system fonts" I believe this refers to the set up of OO where it asks "do you want OO to use apple fonts" yes or no, I selected no, as OO has it's own fonts I believe.

Just to be sure I'm going to remove OO again load the 2.3version and if it asks about fonts I'll say yes to use aple fonts and see id that makes a difference. I doubt it will

Also I removed X11 2.2.0.1 and loadd X11 2.1.1 from leopard install disc

Do you know what this means?

    Any other advice?

How did you get on with this?

    Hi muggyog,

I went to an apple forum and the OO forum. The OOoforum.com wasn't really helpfull, they don't have a special section for mac users and they refered me to another site which was for mac users but it didn't have a forum format.

Anyway that was a bit of a tangent.

It was suggested that I use NeoOffice instead, this doesn't use the X11 application. So I have that installed and working and I'm happy with it. I stayed with the X11 application version that was on my leopard disc. I didn't try to upgrade to X11 2.2.0.1 again. I haven't reinstalled gimp yet but I intend to. It seemed to work.

I still have no idea what those logs mean

    Thanks for asking

Good to see a little lateral thinking solved your problem.

Log reading is a black art due to the cryptic nature of the data. I am no expert however I find them useful to give pointers to the problem area. I was going to suggest that if you still have OpenOffice installed to run it and then check the system log which records in real time. You could open the log in the background maybe you will see something nasty happening. This log is in /var/logs but its easier to go to console app and find it in the log list.

The snippit of the log file you posted was probably from the OO install log.
