Hi all, looking for a photographer for this Sunday coming. I have to take shots at a horse show in Kildare and I was only informed today that there are two arenas on. I need somebody with transport and who can operate under pressure for the day. Show starts at 9:30 and goes on till around 5. About three shots per rider is needed and it is in a showjumping envoironment so the rider over jumps at the apex of the jump. All shots will be sold on the day and then put on a website for viewing afterwards. Good opportunity to get into paid work and learn the ropes of selling on site and what is required to sell.

If I cant get anybody I will be operating on a one arena basis but what can you do :) If you need any more info PM me

    Keith

Id love to do something like this just to practice with my new 18-200 VR lens but without the pressure. Dont have the wheels either.

    Enjoy...

It was great up to the point where them murderous ponies decided it would be fun to chase me down and steal all me sugarcubes...

On a more serious note, great day, even with the frozen fingers, earlobes and feet. It was nice meeting all the guys and gals involved. Again anytime.

    What time did you finish?

Some really nice images there. Never easy to get the timing right, with the horse over the fence.

    Well done.

I especially like the last one there.

It is a very hard sport to shoot and fair play to the two lads for taking it on and splitting the day between them. I am very consistent now doing it and I think it translates to other work I do also, as I was saying to the lads the difference between Pro and Amateur is the Pro only gets one chance to get the shot. Its a lot of pressure to be under and most of the time its just yourself and the camera. I will get the walkie talkies back up working for the next show so we can communicate better if there are any questions. The amount sold at the show wasnt great but I think this had more to do with the weather/market over-saturation than the pictures :)

Sounds like a great experience that i'd missed. if only i've had the gears and some knowledge. borderfox, is this sort of things that one beginner could just tag along and see how it works around? :o

Yeah definitely mart_max, there are generally a lot of people with cameras there, video too. Its not too hard to see how it works, its just the timing of the shots that is the major issue with people new to the sport. I mostly use burst but I can do one shot if I have to, just a case of getting your eye in.

I must run one of the days with the horse again and try to get one of the girls up in the yard to go over a few jumps :) I will see how the timetable is, also there is a show up in the yard where I have my horse around the May Bank Holiday that I will be covering so I can bring a few people up and show them the ropes. They will be mostly smaller jumps so that makes it even harder to get a good shot.

Some nice stuff there, just need a better lens and I wouldn't mind going for the experience

There's a free horse show on in Newbridge at Newbridge College on the 11th May. I went one year and it was fairly good. If you want the practice it is handy...

The yard where I have my horse is having a show on the Monday 5th of May, If a few people are interested I would show them the ropes in shooting. It wouldnt be as high pressure as the other shows I do but I will be selling and printing on site so should be as good as an experience.

I would say the minimum gear for somebody wanting to do this would be: (now I dont want to put people off but from working at this I know a few things about it)

Body: Doesnt matter what body (its the timing that matters) something with a high burst is preferrable

    Lens: 70-200 f2.8 is a workhorse but you can use macro's (100mm or 105mm f2.8)
If you are indoors then 85mm f1.8 is a must the f2.8 lenses dont cut it even with the best lights in the world

    Batteries: 2

    Back-up body
    Wet weather gear
    Warm coats, gloves, hats etc
    Lots of patience :)
Most important Consistency!! Anybody can take one good shot, but it takes somebody consistent to take them for the whole day, my camera logged 800 shots throughout the day and taken bursts into account 95-98% were exactly what I wanted :)

    Hope this helps

I would be up for this! However, I have this nagging feeling, which I can't for the life of me recall, that I have something on that day.... :( Will have to get back to you on this one Keith!
    Grrrr..........

It's a Monday and a bank holiday, if I have no cricket match to play I'll be there.

A breakdown in communication meant that I wasn't out with Keith on Sunday, but if I had been, I'd never have got this shot, so every cloud & all that... :)

:o erkkkk my standard lens kit 17-85 won't go that far then. so i might just watch n learn until a couple of months savings realised into a telephoto zoom :D does anyone knows if there's such a thing renting lens?

I believe that Conns rent lenses.

Of course, some nice boards member might loan you a lens on the day. I know I would, if I was attending.

Not sure what I'm at on that Monday.
