im looking for one for school, burning and video editing. i am considering purchasing this dell, the third one from the left http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs

what do you think? would it be suitable for video editing or would it be a bit slow and is it okay for burning?

As burning goes, it'll be fine. Although most machines no matter how good or bad will burn fine too. Most laptops have very similar CD/DVD rom burners in them with similar speeds.

But as video editing goes, the 2gb of ram , big hdd and decent cpu are more than enough performance wise, they'll help a lot. But don't kit it out with the Intel video card. They're bottom of the range video cards and are likely to really slow things down. Personally, I wouldn't get it.

Unforunately you can't select anything else with that particular model, which is a pain, but thats what Dell can be like. I'd recommend ringing them with the specs and model that you want and then ask them for an ATI or nvidia graphics card. (There's a reason why those laptop are so cheap :P )

Intel X3100 is more powerful then nvidia/ati integrated Go6150/X1100, which still come in a lot of laptops, so I wouldn't worry about it unless you're a gamer as well. Won't even come into it regarding video editing, so if those tasks you've described are the extent of your uses then you're grand.

I read more info on the Intel X3100 and its not bad, but its not great either. As I said, I definately wouldn't buy it (and I'm not a gamer either). As TerrorFrimer said, as long as your not expecting huge performance outta the machine then it'll do.
