I am taking up cricket this June when I finish Uni. I am hoping to join Cork County. I have never played before but love the sport and know the rules etc.

Any advice?? I am 24. Is it too old to take up the sport? Also how helpful are clubs to beginners??

Be really interested in the answer from a Dublin perspective too. I've never really played cricket but would love to, at 29, give it a try.

Ya would be a great way to spend the summer. Playing cricket in the warm weather (hopefully). and of course having a few beers after it. Mad to take it up. Great sport

Think I'll throw my name in here as a would-be beginner.
I love to watch it, I've always wanted to take it up.

It's something I've wanted to try for some time. Are clubs around Dublin welcoming to newcomers? My uncle plays for a club at home, but, since my interest has grown at college (I was never drawn to it as a child, preferring other sports), I haven't been at home to give it a go with him. I'm going to be working in Dublin next summer, and I'll have weekends and evenings free, so I may give it a try. I'm 21, by the way.

All clubs are looking for newcomers. Let me know where you are based and I will recommend a club for you.

I remember playing in the taverns league years ago.

    Really enjoyed it.

I remember getting run out in my 1st game as I was called back so had to go.

Even took a couple of wickets also.

Played for a couple of years but missed a few months due to work and as a result got dropped :(

Its a great game esp if the sun is shining.

What mad it great was that the rules where made up for beginners no lbw and 1st ball was free so you couldn't get old unless run out and the bowler were not allowed to bowl at a million miles another if a learner batting. Could bowl faster if the batsman was good and there was a max run you could get so meant everyone nearly always got a bat.

I'm in the Walkinstown/Crumlin area, is there a club in the Iveagh Grounds?

Any idea how receptive they'd be to a complete newcomer to the game?

I'd imagine they'd have no problem with it, although I'm not a member so I'm not sure.

Their first XI is playing at home tomorrow from midday, so pop along there sometime in the afternoon, and you'll soon find the right person to talk to.

I'm actually umpiring that match, so if there's a break in play introduce yourself.
