ok so i want to upgrade my computer as cheaply as possible (Money is tight)
Don't have loads to spend (300 euro is my max all together) dont mind 2nd hand or oem pieces

At the moment i have a case, a 400w PSU, (skt 939 mobo, amd 3200+,1gb DDR,7300gs All of these will be moved out in to a different case)

So i have a case, a psu, a harddrive, and all I need is a CPU, Ram, Video card and a new mobo
Want Quad Core, 4GB Ram(I know im pushing it :(), atleast an 8800gts and any old motherboard will do

    Can anyone recommend me parts?

For 300 euro there's no hope of that. The cheapest quad core around is the Phenom 9550 at €159 while an 8800GTS runs about €240.

    :O
where are you getting them numbers from?????
I can find a new q6600 on ebay for 125 and a new 8800gts easily for around 120

    Hardwareversand.de have an 8800gts for 114 euro i think,

I was wondering if there was anywhere to get them parts second hand etc for cheaper

I'd say the best you'd get for €300 is:
    Gigabyte P31 mobo
    2x1GB OCZ PC2-6400 ram
    Sparkle 9600GT
    Core 2 Duo E4500

which comes to €308 + delivery on HWV

Thats an old G80 8800GTS rather than the newer G92 GTS which is much faster

These are prices from the likes of Komplett or Overclockers. You may get an 8800GT for 120 euro, not a GTS.

the GT is faster than the G80 GTS, but not the G92 GTS

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 281 ✭✭123

So im better off with a g92 GTS?
How about a 9600GT (Any good?)

If you want to religiously stick to that budget, here's what I'd get, assuming your monitor is 19" or below.

It might appear low end, but at normal resolution, it's actually a powerful setup. Overclocked 8800GTS 320mb can beat 9600GT at 1280x1024. Obviously, the 2160 would want to be overclocked, stock isn't quite sufficient, but a few hundred mhz will bring it up to speed, and it'll clock past 3ghz if you want it too. Both builds feature 4gb ram as you asked..

Would a phenom be better you think for my budget or is the difference in price not worth the huge drop in performance?

The Phenom 9850 is a close match to the Q6600, though the Q6600 would have the edge in gaming. But if you can get a Q6600 for €120 then the Phenom is irrelevent.

Might aswell stick with that 120 euro deal i got.
My motherboard is sorted (Dabs) 47 euro

Now all im unsure about is my ram and graphics.

Completely unsure about GFX card though.
    Any help?

would it not be cheaper to go 4 dual core mobo, theres no winxp 32bit software that uses 4cores as far as i know.,easier to keep cool too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 281 ✭✭123

beggar i may be (lol picked worst time of the year to upgrade pc) but no point to go dual core when octo core cpus (Nehalem) are nearly here in 2009 it makes sense to go quad core.

;) 36 euro for an sli 650i mobo from GIGABYTE
    yum:D

    Change of plan it seems,

Instead of buying a half computer now, im going to upgrade what I have

I have an AMD 64 3200+ [gonna buy a new cooler and overclock the sh1t outta of it (venice core)]
1GB of ram (will buy 1GB more off ebay)
An possibly a 8600gt (50 dollars on ebay, how cant you buy it :o)

Will last me atleast until the end of the year when my wallet isn't empty:D

That is a single core processor you have at present not a dual core, so the lowly clocked dual core would be an improvement. Plus E21XX are known to overclock well, using only the provided Intel stock cooler many are getting them into the region of 2.8-3.0. I think you are mad to be investing more into socket 939? (or is it 754, could be either with a Venice 3200). You'd also be buying more DDR ram this way, which is also nearly obsolete. But anyway good luck with whatever path you choose.
