Woo! One of the most interesting looking films in quite a while gets a very belated Irish release. Trailer here.

Looks like a fantastic art style, and the story looks like an intelligent and hard-hitting one: which is quite rare in animation these days.

Anyone else looking foward to it? Hope it is shown in more screens than the IFI too...

Alot of the french animators working on it worked on the up coming irish animated film "the secret of kells" right after Persepolis which I was working on so I was lucky to see alot of the film as line test. Still glad its finally coming here and have yelled at many to go see it so I can finally drive people cracked taking about it. Fantastic comic book adaption mainly as the artist of the book was the director of the film so it really sticks close to the comics in style and storytelling. The book is well worth picking up.

Is it the sub or dub version the IFI is showing?

I've heard rumours it is the dub, unfortunately. I heard it was a good cast, but I always like to hear the original version.

Cineworld have posters for it, so I guess it's going to get a showing there too.

Can't wait - I loved the books. The animators seem to have followed Marjane Satrapi's style closely which is great.

Went to see this this evening and thought it was superb. Art style is really something special: the stylistic touches make every single frame a wonder to behold. I don't think animation is usually applauded for its take on socio-political concerns, but this hits all the bases: oppressive regimes, religious intolerance and so forth. Very intelligent film, with a simple easy to relate to coming of age story at the centre.

One or two annoyances (strange out-of-place musical number (satire perhaps?), sometimes overdone voice-over, and the lack of the French subtitle track) but truly a special & unique film, and definitely worth a watch on the big screen if you get a chance.

I can't imagine this being dubbed. The thought of it is horrific. The original French suited the film so much.

The dub was fine really, didn't take anything from the film, the original French did suit it a whole lot more though.

Excellent film - and Johnny pretty much summed up all the positive qualities above. I really liked the actual animation style, as if drawing stark outlines with a heavy piece of charcoal. Some images really stood out as a result in a manner which could never have worked in a CG piece or even the more traditional animations of Disney or Studio Ghibili.
I actually learnt more from this movie than any in a long time and its politics are never presented in a condescending manner. It's quite educational in showing life in Teheran through a plausible, and very fallible, narrator. I'll agree that the musical piece was a bit out of place but it really didn't hit any bung notes.

FWIW, this is the reason the Irish Times gave for us getting the dubbed version and not the subbed:

I toatally agree: having not had the slightest knowledge of Iranian history before, I think the film actually acted as a very accessiable way of informing the audience of something they probably weren't entirely familiar with. It is all done respectfully and carefully, and an interesting insight into the country.

As for the dubbing, it isn't too bad. But the subs would be far prefferable. Something about the dubbing in this (and most animé dubbing too) that just seems a bit cold and clinical: very wooden voice-acting from a lot of the cast or something.

makes me laugh since we championed being the first country to put a digital projector in every cinema...

*sigh* whatever happened to that brilliant idea?


btw saw it last night, and aside from a few disjointed spacing moments I thought it was fantastic.
