    Hi all,
I have been charged with the pleasure of coming up with new logo for the housing charity that I work for. The charity (actually it's a trust but nevermind), has been around for 100+ years and this "traditional" vibe needs to be captured it the design.
Anyway, having come up with a few ideas on paper I now need to transfer these onto a computer.
Here's where I need the advise! Part of my design incorporates the outline & some detail of a very old photo of one of our buildings. I want to scan the photo onto a computer and then trace what I want from the photo. Once I have, what I hope will look like a pencil sketch of the building, I can remove the photo leaving my wonderful (I hope) drawing.
And finally my question is..... What application can I use for this? I have access to Fireworks (as part of Studio 8 package) but I have a feeling that I might need some of the Adobe products. I cant go buying these so is there an opensourse app I could use?
    Sorry to ramble ontongue.gif
    Joe

For photo editing (adobe photoshop type app) use Gimp
For vector graphics (adobe illustrator type app) use InkScape
Both are available for linux or windows

You might find a "filter" for Gimp that will convert your picture to artwork... but to be honest I don't know much about artwork :) you'd be best asking on a specialised Gimp forum.
