Advise on OS design apps please?

    Hi all,
    I have been charged with the pleasure of coming up with new logo for the housing charity that I work for. The charity (actually it's a trust but nevermind), has been around for 100+ years and this "traditional" vibe needs to be captured it the design.
    Anyway, having come up with a few ideas on paper I now need to transfer these onto a computer.
    Here's where I need the advise! Part of my design incorporates the outline & some detail of a very old photo of one of our buildings. I want to scan the photo onto a computer and then trace what I want from the photo. Once I have, what I hope will look like a pencil sketch of the building, I can remove the photo leaving my wonderful (I hope) drawing.
    And finally my question is..... What application can I use for this? I have access to Fireworks (as part of Studio 8 package) but I have a feeling that I might need some of the Adobe products. I cant go buying these so is there an opensourse app I could use?

    For photo editing (adobe photoshop type app) use Gimp
    For vector graphics (adobe illustrator type app) use InkScape
    Both are available for linux or windows

    You might find a "filter" for Gimp that will convert your picture to artwork... but to be honest I don't know much about artwork :) you'd be best asking on a specialised Gimp forum.
