First Tri - Clothing/Transition Advice Needed!

    Hi Folks.
Doing my first Tri in less than 3 weeks....gulp...shudder...

Only a Sprint one in Limerick (Joey Hannon)

I have no tri/wet suit, but as it's in the pool I won't need one. I obviously have speedos, cycling bib ( both long and short) cycling tops and shorts.

    So here is my question.
    Should I

    A) wear my cycling bib in the pool to save transition times?
    B) Put my cycling bib over my togs during transition
    C) Not bother with either a/b and just wear running shorts ober my togs for the 20k cycle?
    D) None of the above stupid!

    Any help much appreciated!!

up to you. personally I would wear the togs during the swim and pull a pair of tri shorts on in transition because the world doesn't need to see quite that much of me out on the roads. I woul dtend not to wear cycling shorts in the pool. The chamois is very thick so they'll take on a lot of water. Similarly unless lycra fitted shorts, then run shorts would provide too much drag. Ok to put them on in transition though, The bike is short enough that padding shouldn't be necessary.

    Hi funkyzeit,
Joey Hannon is where I pop my triathlon cherry as well!

I'm wearing small lycra shorts, a sports bra and a technical running vest top. I'll be popping into the pool on that and just getting on the bike wet, apparently you dry off after only a small while. I was a bit worried about muffin top but now I don't care, I just want to get through the race and I don't care how I look as long as I finish.

One nice tip I've heard is to have a bowl of water ready to dip your feet into before you put your shoes on to remove any grit.

Grab a tri suit. You should be able to swim, cycle and run in it and look cool all at the same time :) They aren't thaaaaaat expensive and if you intend to carry on then it's a worthwhile purchase.

Pity me who had to to buy running shoes (cos I needed a new pair), a trisuit, a wetsuit £300+ for that lot and this coming weekend clipless cycling shoes, cleats and pedals so even more cash :) I better fecking be able to finish my first tri in July! But then, it's an investment for future events because I'm enjoying the training (when my legs don't feel like falling off)

EDIT: Is anyone in here doing my one? It's the Salmon Run in Ballina.

I've done Joey Hannon Tri a few times. Great setup and the move to UL is great. The swim is super and the run is so fast. The surface helps with fast running.

However it is Limerick and it is on at the beginning of May so it is usually f*cking freezing and probably wet too. Last year I woe a tri-suit and a toasty gillet. Ditched the gillet on the run.

A trisuit will dry quickly and that would be what I would recommend.

Yes I am doing the Salmon Run. It's my first outdoor one so should be interesting.

Not really looking forward though to jumping on the bike and trying to click in the clipless pedals. Any tips?

    Practice.

Have proper tri shoes and have them already clipped into the pedals and practice practice practice. Thats all there is to it.

don't forget to take your wetsuit off (has happened)
don't get so caught up in looking at the pedals that you forget to look where you're going and cycle into a signpost (has also happened)

On a more serious note, as tunney says practice. If you can manage to have the shoes on the pedals it makes things a lot easier. Clip the pedals on with the straps open or loose. You may need to use a rubber band to hold them horizontal as you run through transition (this will break when you start to pedal) Some people can mount as they run but I need to stop. Try not to get in anyone's way. The temptation is to stop just after the line and someone coming up behind you will crash into you. When you get on the bike, put your feet on top of the shoes until you get a bit of speed up, then get your feet into the shoes and tighten the straps.

    Great advice there.
I've been starting to worry about this as well, Joey Hannon is a first for me as well.
I normally cycle with a tracksuit bottom on (The speeds I do generate a lot of cold with the wind resistance ;-) )
But I was considering ditching these for the running shorts. Could be cold if it rains though.

Any boardsies fancy meeting up afterwards and saying hello?

Hunny - did you say 40k is a short enough cycle - Fair do's to ya for thinking that. It's long enough for me though.

40ks is a short cycle, but as the distance goes up the intensity goes down. A 40k TT versus 180k TT not much difference IMHO.

Ditch the tracksuit bottoms, get tri shorts. Running shorts aren't recommended.

I'm itching to get going. My biggest overall panic is the swim. I know I can do the distance but living in London means open water training is near impossible although there is supposedly a 100m open water swimming pool in tooting I have to locate. I'm pissing myself that I won't be able to breathe or something will **** up on the swim and all my hard work will go down the pan.

I'm not looking for any major times. My goals, in order are: Complete the thing and beat my two friends who are competing as well.

The weather better be nice :P

I was looking into Tri Suits myself lately and i've spotted a few at decent prices on http://www.irishfit.eu/menstriapparel.html

I was looking at the Mens Elite 2XU Tri-Suit for €95 and the Mens 2XU Endurance Tri-Suit for €69. Also the Orca Mens Race Tri Suit with Pocket for €75

Has anyone ever used any of them? And if so are any of them any use. what's the main difference that makes one €69 and the other €95 in the 2XU range?
