    Hey

Just looking for bit of info.
Had all 4 teeth out under GA just a day ago now and my tongue is still really numb although if i bite gently on it i can feel it.

Bit worried that the nerve might have been affected cos i believe that numbness should be gone after 4 hours or so?

Apart from that doing great so far and for anyone worrying about this op dont listen to peoples horror stories cos its not as bad as people make out!

    thanks

Try not to worry about it.
The feeling in your mouth might just be confused with all the swelling, it probably doesn't know what happened to it!!

If there is nerve damage causing the numbness the chances of it being permanent are very low. It may just take a bit of time before it gets back to normal. I had all 4 taken out in Jan and it took a while for the sensation to come back...but its 90% better now :)

    Thanks mydarkstar,

Yeah woke up this morn and it is defo not as tingly so think its getting there.

Today is first day i am feeling pain, third day meant to be worst and already my face is more swollen and every tooth feels sensitive and sore and jaw aching where I can feel the gap where the root of the tooth and bone where!

But still its bearable and definitely better out than in!
    thanks

I didnt enjoy my experience but I agree with you, definitely better out than in!!!

Just remember to keep up the warm salt water rinses, they help keep things clean cos you really dont want any infections getting into those nice big gaps. Not sure if you're able to brush your teeth yet but if you're not able to then I found Corsodyl Mouthwash to be very helpful too... took away that sticky feeling that was driving me mad. The dentist agreed that it wouldnt do any harm since it was medicated/antiseptic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 288 ✭✭suzieb

Yeah i'm doing about 6 mouthrinses a day so far so area should be clean enough!
Managing to brush my teeth too but too wary of upsetting the clot to brush around the huge holes where wisdom teeth were! My breath stinks tho and nothing will clear it but suppose its an open wound in mouth so not gonna be pretty- the b/f kisses me on the forehead only for fear of being knocked out :o

Yeah think will give corsodyl a try-its good mouthwash but actually stains the teeth if use it for more than week so try not to use it for too long if you are still using it.

    Hey Zascar

No probs will keep you updated.
    ***mod edit no names****

Just to give ya few tips i've found tho...
-several days beforehand rub vaseline into lips esp the corners of mouth and even inside your mouth cos they will be yanking at it a bit! My lips havnt cracked at all.
-I took maybe 3 or 4 arnica tabs day before op cos forgot to do it earlier and only have a bruise on my lip and small one on my eye(some people get bad brusing so i might just be lucky or the arnica worked?)
-Bring a book to hosp with you cos I was due to go in at 11.30 and didn't go to theatre until 4 and its long day and it'll be hard to sleep if nervous at all.
-Stock up on eggs, yoghurts mashed potato and gravy as this will be easiest thing to eat for first 3 days. Scrambled eggs and yoghurt for breakfast, soup for lunch but make sure its not lumpy veg, mash for dinner-thats all i've eaten since tues and can only manage couple of spoons of each and feel kinda full.
-Throat can be sore for day or two due to whatever they put in throat to help you breathe so maybe get some lockets or that-i just tolerated the pain but looking back these will soothe it.
-Sleep on bigger pillow than normal first night cos mouth might be bit bloody and keep something to spit in close by cos you'l be too tired to keep gettin up.

Thats all i can think of at mo but will add if think of more.
    HTH

    Hi suzie

I had all 4 out under general anesthetic a few years back

apparently the bottom ones were a bit "difficult". In the few weeks after the op I had numbness and even some hyperasthesia along my lower lip (it was almost tender to touch). I was quite worried about this but by about 2 weeks it was almost back to normal (about 95%), by 6 weeks it was completely back to normal. There is a risk of permanent nerve damage with this procedure though (I think back then it was somewhere between 1 in 200 to 1 in 300) but it's still very early days for you, it's good that it's improving now though. For me I think the swelling/bruising started getting worse around the 2nd/3rd day, I looked ridiculous (like I had mumps or soemthing!) but I presume that doesn't happen everyone..........!

I had my lower right impacted wisdom tooth and upper right wisdom tooth extracted 12 days back by ***mode edit no names*** is fully registered with Bupa (now quinn-health), I only paid the consultancy fee (200 euro) and X-Ray picture fee (50 euro). Remaining cost of the surgery for me is covered by Bupa.

The surgery was done under general anaesthesia in 30 minutes or so. After sleeping for an hour, I drank a lot of water and was served with a cup of ice cream. Then my wife collected me back home. As I'm living in Foxborough in Lucan, it's just 5 minutes to home.

It's my first time in my life being applied general anaesthesia. I felt a bit excited after waked up in the ward. I immediately sent emails to my colleagues after I returned home. Though it's very difficult to open the mouth, I had little problem to type.

From second day my half face blew up a little bit as the muscles swelling. Luckily, it didnt last long. The swelling subsided from the forth day. I felt better every day since then. I stayed at home for one week before back to work. From eighth day, I started to feel itchy around the wound, which was the good sign that it would be fully healed soon, though the whole process would take months according to the nice illustration in the middle of this page ***mode edit no names***

I had mine done in Cork a good few years back, 6 or 8. I had a jaw like David Coulthard for ages after it. "Long tortuous roots" was the description. Sick as a parrot after the anaestethic and to this day my lower lip is numb.

    hi all
i had my 4 wisdom teeth taken out last thursday in cork
was very nervous cause never been under GA, all docs and nurses were very nice to me and reassured me they wouldnt break my jaw and never do ( they told me dont listen to those horror stories, as i was told by many people of this happening). i dont even remember being knocked out, just remember wakin up and being really drowsy. the pain didnt kick in properly until the next day the anisthetic lasted ages. the second and third days are the worst it its very painful and ponstan doesnt cure the pain, but i know itll get better. its still very sore today and especially at night. my tongue was numb for nearly 2 days. its very frustrating not being able to eat properly or even brush my teeth, they told me in hospital not to use mouth wash like listerine but im washing my mouth out in warm salty water and trying to brush a bit of my teeth!. living on scrambled eggs, beans, and ice cream! my cheeks are still very swollen! hopefully this will go away soon! at least its over, im the worst patient ever so if i can go through it anyone can! owwwwwwwwwww its still killin me though

oh ya forgot to mention my throat was very sore too not sure why, and had the most annoying feeling in my ears ,sounded like a heart beat coming out of my ears it was really really annoying i even rang the hospital and they said once its not bleeding its after calming down a bit now but dont know what the hell it was. i didnt bleed much but girl next to me did so it depends on the person i guess :)

Its a big operation. I was seriously out for a week and it took me a month to fully recover. Give it time and keep taking the ponstan. Expect to be bruised, stiff, sore and out of sorts for at leats two weeks. Then it gets better.

i had to go to doc today with my ear cause was wrecking my head like pressure sound coming out of it avery 2 seconds its not going away doc couldnt see anything and said to go to my dentist and gave me another set of antibiotics cause my face is stil swollen incase i get infection. i miss being able to eat!

    Brown boots,

Reason your throat was sore is from tubes used to help you breathe while under GA.

I've had that heartbeat noise in my ear too at nighttime and think if ya try using ear drops it'll clear it... but I'm not a doctor!

    Hi All,

I had an awful experience I got my lower wisdom tooth removed by dentist in Lucan 3 weeks ago. He was a french guy who said it wud be no prob to take it out. It was buried under gum, It took him almose 2 hours to get my tooth out it was horrendeous...

Anyway the next morning I was screaming in agony after almost overdosing on painkillers and nothing worked I went back to his surgery at 8 am my face was enormous, not just the normal swelling... when he seen me he brushed his hand at me and said I have no time for you now...

I started crying ( btw i could open my jaw even enough to pop tablet in)
He then abrubtly took me into his room and looked at me and said u have "trimis" and told me to go home and take anti biotic...

I walked out of his room crying and drove myself straight to James hospital where I was admitted within 10 mins on IV drips.. I ended up in there for 6 days!!!!!!!

I had absess the size of a tennis ball, this trismis( like lock jaw) took 3 weeks to go AND MY TONGUE REMAINS NUMB since it was done. I am now under a maxifacial surgeon who is taking about trying to reconnect nerve to my tongue which he thinks dentist severed...

Can anyone tell me any more info on this. My speech is badly affected I am still on painkillers and I cant taste much.
Feels like a trip to dentist has changed my life.

hi, i know the last post on this was a year ago but can anyone help - got my 4 wisdom teeth out last friday in hermitage (2 bottom ones were impacted). when i came around the dentist said that he had had to do 'a bit more work' on the right hand side. that was 4 days ago, i was ok until yesterday, then was in horrendous pain, so bad. my morphine ran out last nite. pain is getting better i think - just on solpadeine now.

the thing is, my bottom lip and lower jaw is completely numb on the side that he had to do more work on. occassionally i get a tingling sensation in my lip, but only for a few seconds. please tell me this is normal because ive been on wiki and if its not gone within 48 hours it looks like it could be permanent. i am freaking out. please any advice would be great.

    thanks.

    Hi Angelica,

I got one wisdom extracted 2 years ago now. I still have nerve damage - though it is coming back slowly but surely. My surgeon said to me after the surgery that extractions "dont get more worse than your one". Because of the numbness I was going back to him every three to four weeks for a checkup on the nerve....I gave up going in the end because it was so inconvenient but the surgeon said that any compression of the nerve that leads to this numbness can take anywhere up to 18months to come back. He did say that the more tingling sensations and shooting pains you get means that its coming back, so thats good from your perspective. For myself,I know from going to my own dentist that the nerve is not severed (they can test the test with temperature and electrical stimulation) and I can only hope that some day it will settle back to normal....its not a pleasant feeling but funnily you slowly get used to it anyway. Hope this helps and I hope yours gets better quickly.

thanks for your reply! i rang the surgeon and described the numbness to him - he said it was totally out of the ordinary and he had no idea why i would have it, that he didnt have to go near the nerve. so ive to go back to see him friday.

meanwhile, my mum meets a friend earlier and is describing the numbness, before she even finished the friend could tell her that the nerve running across my mouth is affected because of my swollen gums, and that its not at all unusual to have numbness for a week or so.

so, how come the surgeon couldnt tell me that?!?!!? doesnt exactly inspire confidence.

I had nerve damage after wisdom teeth out,it lasted a couple of months at most, it eventually cleared. Its not permanent in the majority of cases so I wouldnt worry too much, its not so long since you've had them done so try not to worry. The lower teeth sit really close to a nerve so best to see what your dentist says when you see him on friday.

I found tingling gradually disappeared bit by bit until one day I woke up and though "woah, its gone-yahoo"!
