Meself and herself are heading on a little road trip on Friday 2nd May. We're going to head north or north-west from Dublin for no particular reason (though might meet a few friends on the way). I'm away until the 1st so I'd like to stay somewhere nice on the Friday night but where? Fun/interesting/nice but not massively expensive would be the way forward, it's the bank holiday weekend so it may make things more awkward. Suggestions very much appreciated.

my 2 suggestions would be either carlingford for a weekend on the loughs or further north east to the mourne mountains around newcastle, plenty of walks in the mourne mountains which are stunning, beautiful beaches and dunes around newcastle etc...

Just realised I put in North east when I actually meant to put in north west. Just as well I'm not driving :) North West? Doesn't have to be far from Dublin really for Friday night.

lol, fair enough. carlingford is still north though, and then you could head on to Giant's causeway, further north.

north west i know very little, although it's considered to be one of the most beautiful parts of this wee island (when it's not raining), but it takes at least 5 hours to get to, so isn't perfect for a weekend.

I suppose what would be very helpful would be somewhere specific to stay like a hotel on the way North-North West out of Dublin.

Not too sure if you'd get more help in the Dublin forum ?

Sligo - some of the nicest beaches and country walks - only 2 (and a bit) hours drive (once you're out of the traffic). There are many nice places to stay - how about a Hidden Ireland (Temple house) which is less pricey than a fancy hotel but so much nicer.... or the Georgina Campbell guide (see website) is pretty good at all price levels.

Not trying to actually stay in Dublin, just somewhere on the way out.
