    Hi there,

First picture posting, took this a week or two ago, and currently have it as a desktop background and I think it looks good.
Taken hand held with 400d and kit lens.
B&W and sharpening done CS3(newbie) but looks way better on full version.

(actually version i used has a darker grey border)

Pic not bad but the grey border does nothing for it, I think. have you tried other bolder colours or black?

I'm not sure if it's just the border, but I'm seeing a big expanse of grey. How did you convert it? Have you checked out tutorials for different methods of conversion, that might give you a bit more detail in the mountains...

grey border does nothing for this at all, I'd like more contrast and maybe to see it with a black border?

Have to say i really like the panorama but also have to agree with elven in terms of the grey expanse. It took me a split second for my brain to realise that there was a border (ok - its late and perhaps the brain aint functioning as well ;o) but thats probably partially to do with the grey expanse.

I do like the concept you are applying to putting a border on it - chunky top n bottom with panorama to the edge on left and right. I would think it may be better on black and perhaps a different attempt at the black n white conversion. If it was a reasonable day that you captured it - the colour version may also look quite nice.

Well done. Overall i'd have to say i like.

BTW - top and bottom borders look slightly different size? intended or not?

I'm inclined to wonder where you were standing taking this (little envious as I love Ross Castle) and I like the field of view here. I think it's a lovely composition.

However - there's always a however - I have some issues with what you've done with the shot. Obviously you've had some feedback about the border which I guess is necessary if you want to use a panoramic as a desktop image. I'd choose a different colour, either black or white. Which one you go for would depend on the following.

With respect to the black and white conversion, it's nicely done, except it's very grey and, to some extent, lacking in contrast. This I think is a little bit of a pity. Obviously without access to the original file I can't swear to this but it looks to me like you've a lot to play with as regards the clouds and mountains. I think if you played around with the contrast prior to doing the black and white conversion you could get some interesting and strong effects. If you get there then I definitely think that a white border is a goer. But even so, I suspect it would be better on black at the moment. Out of interest, is it a composite or a crop top and bottom?

Anyway, I do like the composition a lot, I love the aspect ratio, and if it was taken recently I suspect you've a lot of great colour to play with at lake level.

Welcome on board, by the way.

People have already mentioned the border so I'll pass onto the pic....

I'd like to see this with the Castle not so central in the frame, maybe crop those branches off from the RHS, this will also bring the castle more off centre?

The contrast is an issue but not nearly as much as it would be by using a different colour frame .. the grey just makes it wash out, I can see black working really well here...

now on the positive side, well done for the panoramic crop and the light is quite nice too....basically, you did well with the initial shot, so there's nothing wrong here that a little processing work wont fix,

feel free to ignore these comments, it's been widely proven in the past that I'm an idiot :)
