Any consequences if I don't sign on?

I am out of work since last week. I believe that I am entitled to Job Seekers Benefit (the one that isn't means tested). I have heard rumours, but no solid facts, that if I don't "sign on" I will in some way be adversely affected. Such things as losing PRSI entitlements such as Dentist etc. have been mentioned, but I haven't got any hard facts. Thankfully, I am not in immediate financial need but I do not want to jeopardise my long term position e.g. risking state pension entitlements. Can someone please help me out?

If your out of work you should 'Sign on'. It's your money your loosing out wheather you need it now or not. you need to stay 'in the system' if your to get your full intitlements.

    Thanks Gall,

I appreciate your reply. I suppose more specifically, I am wondering what are those entitlements that I would miss out on, other than the weekly payment. Thanks again for your input.

it all depends on you circumstances but the basic is 197.90 and then there's medical card , rent relife, mortgage relife fuel allowance back to work allowance kids school books/uniforms also there is tax back ....you should return your p60's for the last four years.

Op, I'm in the exact situation except I'm out of work 2 weeks now (first time ever in 18 Years!), I'm just back from my local Social Welfare office after signing on today, I was aksed why I hadn't signed on sooner after & was made unemployed, I said I'd hoped to find a job pretty soon but 2 weeks later I hadn't & was signing on.... I was then told that I'd just forgone 2 weeks assistance that I could have claimed if I'd signed on sooner :( .....

The best thing is to go to your local SW office with your P45, Passport, Driving Licence & Utility Bill, I found the staff in my local one very helpful & supportive.

By not signing on you're missing out on your credits. Long-Term these can affect your pension but short term they may affect all your other insurance based payments. Get your @ss into the labour on Tuesday and sign on.

Anyway, if you've worked and paid PRSI you have insured yourself against unemployment and you're owed that money, it's not charity. Go claim.

Yep, daft as it seems, you need to sign on to have your "stamp" paid for dental/pension etc.

If you don't feel comfortable collecting € from the State, just give your dole to charity of choice.

Thanks guys. I'd actually done nothing about this, but you've made me decide to go in on Tuesday and sign on. My own parents cos of stuff they didn't do in the 70s missed out on pension entitlements, so I won't make the same mistake.

    Thanks again.

For every week you don't claim you are missing out on credits which count towards the old age pension and dental and optical benefit amongst other things.
