    I need one too.
There was a thread somewhere here about what was good for displaying colours.

My advice is don't get a 20" widescreen. I got the Dell. Lovely (and expensive) but too small and nowhere worth the money.

In fact I'm not sure widescreen is any use for photography unless it's 24" or bigger. A 19" square is better than a 20" ws. In fact Im sorry I didn't buy two reasonably priced 19" Acers. We have then at work and they are grand for anything I need. The Dell was a waste of money. Another one of those hypes that I fell for :(

Was just about to ask - why you wouldnt go for a widescreen but then you mentioned 24" - I have a 24" widescreen and its the biz - you've great screen room for all your programs - it does the job of two monitors - you can put two browsers side by side just nicely

22" inches are getting cheaper and 24" are fairly affordable too

Mines a dell which is ok... havent used many other lcds so cant say if its good or bad really.

Basically get the biggest you can afford... esp if you use it a lot

I have a LG 20inch wide with 2000:1 contrast, and i also got a 19 inch dell that sucks, its so big difference between them there is no way i can put the dell with the same settings as the LG what is a pitty, i didnt went to samsung at the time but at this time the samsung 22 inch wide with 3000:1 in my opinion would be the best option...

I love my 20" LG widescreen. Its a couple of years old now, you'd easily get a quality 22" for the same money I paid for it back then.

the dimensions are the least of your concerns,

see if the screen is TN (Twisted Nematic) very common among lower spec panels or IPS (In Plane Switching) better, or S-IPS (Super-In Plane Switching) much better!!! more pricy too!

the other thing is response times not a huge thing for still photography really but anything below 6ms would be ok.
and connectivity some come with HDMI and every other connection since that!!

    :)

when your done choosing look it up here clicky

Thank you for all the advice, but I've decided to just buy another laptop. To explain what happened, I opened up my MBP upon arriving at work this morning to discover a beautiful crack running down the middle of the display. I'm going to wipe the hard disk, sell it for parts and buy a Thinkpad in a few weeks.

    kind of anyway

I was thinking of getting an external monitor for my laptop for photo editing. Someone mentioned that I would be better off getting a 1080p HD TV instead as it can be used as a monitor...is this likely to be near the same quality as a dedicated monitor ?

Ive heard this been discussed before. I persume as a beginner with a decent enough laptop i could manage photoshop ok on it? Would i be really limited to what i could do on it?

Dark side? I'm completely pragmatic about my choice of OS, and a Linux/Windows dual boot is incredibly useful to have.
