Bonner quits Donegal

The following is from Hoganstand.com I'm not entirely surprised here but I guess Smashey and Seanies can offer us some insight. My opinion is that Donegal are weakened for the Ulster Championship as a result of this.

    Here is the article.

Donegal’s Ulster championship hopes have suffered a major setback with the news that Ciaran Bonner has opted out of the county football panel.

The powerful half forward was a notable absentee from the Donegal squad for last Sunday’s NFL final round defeat to Derry, having informed the team management of his decision following the Laois game in Ballyshannon the previous Sunday.

While it’s believed that manager Brian McIver is keen to get the Glenswilly clubman back on board, the player insists that he will be concentrating solely on club matters for the remainder of the year.

"That’s it this time, for sure," he said. "There is definitely no way back this time. I will be concentrating on club football now and we have a big championship match with St. Eunan’s coming up in three weeks’ time.

"I am 100 per cent sure of my decision. I am gone from the panel and I won’t be back for the summer."

It is understood that Bonner was upset at being substituted against Laois, a week after he was omitted from the starting line-up for the game with Tyrone. Late last year, he revealed that he was taking a year out from the game to go travelling, but other circumstances led to him staying at home and he rejoined the county squad for the new season.

I'd hope he's not quitting over that.

Work along with some of the clubmates and I doubt fame has got to his head.
Loves to see his name in the media, I can assure you he will be back playing.
When this story dies down, he can then get his name in the papers again when he announces he is coming back.
A story which is worse is of Colin Kelly, a club mate of Bonners and twice the player( was on county squad 2 years ago when cork beat us in QFs). He has decided to give up football all together:confused:

Colin Kelly, whatever happened there? Scored a great point that day when he came on as sub.

I'm surprised at this. Did Bonner not only join the panel again 2 months ago? Strange.

I don't think he's a major loss. Decent player 2 years ago, seemed to be living on his name.

We have Roper (who's proved me wrong again), Hegarty coming back to form, Kavanagh coming back to full fitness and Walsh who seems a good find from Junior Football. Half Forward line isn't a major worry.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

Ye, Kelly scored a great point against Cork and also scored a long range one against Fermanagh in the previous round. Could shoot with both feet as well, very skilful. He went to america then and came back last year just before glenswilly played Dungloe in senior championship.
He has now packed it in altogether. I wont quote what he said as that would cause a massive debate itself.
I also agree that Bonner is no major loss, head soon wont fit in jersey anyhow. If (big if at that) devenney could throw in one good championship, I think we would do well.
