    Hi all!
Just wondering if anyone has any info on what i would need to make my guitar sound like a banjo/mandolin/accordian? I was told to try the roland 20/30/33 but i dont want to fork out all that cash just to find out it doesnt and from what i can gather from info sourced from roland and the net i dont think it does! Anyone know of any other makes or models? This will have to be something i can use at gigs.
Thanks in advance for any help offered!:)

I think Roland have the most effective products out there as they are not just effects units in the sense that they treat the sigal coming from your instrument (like a phase shifter or wah pedal). Combined with their special pickup your guitar signal is converted to midi which can then trigger actual piano/mandolin/monkey samples so it sounds a lot better. There are loads of you tube vidoes out there with demos. The only alternative that would be more effective IMO would be to just use a midi keyboard through some decent software. I'd say you could actually use the roland pickup through alternative software (reason, ableton) and get good results.

im not familiar with the i40m but as long as it has a midi input i dont see why the midi pickup wouldnt work. Dont quote me on that though! I'm assuming the pickup is just a midi trigger and does not need the roland software/hardware to decode it.
Anyone here own a midi pickup that can advise?

The GK pickup doesn't send out a midi signal, its basically just 6 mini pickups (one for each string) which is used to connect to a device like a Axon AX50 or a Roland GR20 which will convert the separate audio signals into midi. You cannot plug a GK pickup directly into a Korg i40m.

The Roland GR33 would be able to model a banjo, mandolin and a accordian. You can see the full preset list for that device here http://www.roland.com/PRODUCTS/en/GR-33/images/TONE_LIST.jpg

you can also get a gi-20 which will essentially converts the gk3 input into midi signals which you can then send out to whatever you want - so if you have a sound module allready or some vsts etc -it might be a cheper option than the gr33 - theres also a lot of contol in the gi 20 re matching how you play to the units tracking
