Camera insurance for RTW trip

    Hi all,

I own a Nikon D80 with a couple of lenses, filters, cables, batteries etc.
As I'm off on a 6-month round the world trip :D:p I am anxious to get adequate insurance that will cover the cost of the camera should it be stolen. I have checked some of the previous posts and many people allude to contents cover with your house insurance. However as we don't own a house this avenue of cover is not open to us. Can anyone suggest an alternative? Does travel insurance cover such items?

    Many thanks,
    Scobius

I too would also be interested in any advice or parties that people know of in reguards to insuring camera equipment on a long trip away.

You should be able to get contents only insurance on your home (even without owning it). Most people renting accommodation would have contents insurance (or they should have).

You will need to check carefully though, if your camera gear (on a contents policy) would be covered for an extended trip abroad.

For you though, you may be better off seeing if your holiday insurance could be altered to protect your gear.

Failing that, you would need specialised camera gear insurance. I have that, and it covers me for 45 days out of the country (per trip). I've a bit more gear than you, and my policy costs around €400.

I use the contents to insure mine on trips ... but as far as I remember there is a limit to the number of days you are covered during the trip ... something like 30 but don't quote me on that ... I vaguely remember having this conversation with One Direct before my recent 35 days trip to Africa ... they said it was OK on the understanding that it was only a few more days ... bearing in mind it was a photo safari and I was bringing nearly €8k worth of gear ...

The other cheap option is to get travel insurance from VHI on the basis of extending your existing health policy ... not sure how much cover there is for gear though ... you may want to research this ... it may be possible to extend it to increase cover ...

Failing that you are looking at one of those you find in the back of Photography magazines ... the current issue of Outdoor Phtographer lists - www.photocover.co.uk ... I know nothing about these guys however...
