A state of the art Accident and Emergency Department in Cork will only be able to operate on a part-time basis, it emerged this afternoon

The Mercy Hospitals Chief Executive, Pat Madden, confirmed today that while the new unit will open in the summer, it will only operate between 8am and 8pm, owing to staff shortages.

Mr. Madden said the HSE was refusing to allocate any more money. He said the cost of the additional staff would amount to just over €1.5 million annually.

So this on the back of the cave in on the airport debt issue as well as:

    -Amgen fiasco
-delays in Road & Rail building
-CUH regularly having nearly 40 patients on trolleys

To name but a few, Well done Cork FF politicians.

I've no time for any politician but I don't think you can really blame them for what happened with Amgen.

I can't believe why people are getting so worked up over the Mercy thing!!
Just don't get sick, hurt yourself, have an accident or know someone who is sick or dying or in need of medical treatment after 8pm.
I mean....thats so simple. We're being far to greedy expecting the Government to provide emergency health care ALL the time!

I am deeply disappointed by the announcement by Amgen that it is indefinitely postponing its plant at Carrigtwohill, Co Cork.

its actually embarassing with the whole part time a and e thing.... what are we supposed to do with the sick people at 8 o clock? sorry lads go home or die?

mind u if the the public didnt abuse the system so much it might work a bit better.... coming to a&e with every bang and bump instead of going to their gp or southdoc..... and just turning up BOLLOXED out of their brains on drink.... then theres the scumbags who say theyve got chest pain so they can be bumped up on the queue....

its not just a political thing... the mercy is deeply in debt because of poor management, im training there 4years now and we dont know if we'll get a job yet none of the clerical staff are being let go....

    grrr....
