There's bad stories about all manufacturers!

I bough a WD 500 gig just when they came out first. Never missed a beat. I know have 3!

I've had maxtor and segate hard drives fail on me. Never any hassle with WD or Lacie. 500 gig hard drives are very well priced these days, I'd go for the extra space.

Have a Medion Drive. Used to give me all shades of hell but not with my new PC si Ill put that on me abusing it. Its been good to me, but it loves to heat up. Makes a fantastic hand/mug warmer all on its own.

WD Passport drive is giving me grief because I lost the cable: its particular about what kind of power it receives as its a demanding USB-powered device. If you get one I reccomend a <1m gold cable or a 2xA to 1xMini-B cable for it. Or any decent quality USB under 45cm will do the trick: cheap USB sadly, does not. I've tried :( so I have to wait on a new order of a 2xA cable. Besides this snafu the passport drive is dead handy for PC to PC transfers and taking your work with you. Price is reasonable too: picked it up in the states for about $140 over xmas for 250gb.

Depends on how mobility is going to affect you. If its a case of being nervous about installing a new internal drive I'd give it a lash because those are the cheapest. then you have the Bulky AC powered externals, right down to the USB powered externals like passport drives.

This one doubles up as a media player straight to your TV.

Yeah, I have one of them. Will do the job nicely! Not too loud, very quick and looks nice too.
