Anyone have any idea what happened to this, will it ever be finished?

Why? Are they constructing more windmills? There are about 20 (?) out there at the moment.

as far as I know they are working away at it, a lot of the work can only be done when the weather is behaving, so it goes on the back burner over winter. there will be loads of them by the time its finished...

The original plans were for a 200-turbine, 500MW system, which would have been the largest windfarm in the world at the time it was proposed.

I thought there were only 7 or 8?

If so, then they'd be the original 7 installed and paid for by GE as a showcase of those particular turbines.

Its a pity really...Airtricity talked about creating the biggest windfarm in the world, and then effectively dumped the idea and went elsewhere because they didn't get subsidisation.

...in addition, GE have pulled out of the offshore wind-turbine business, so it could be a while.

jeez that slipped gently into the night didn't it ?
I was under the impression that it was underway. Shame, although they were blatant grant-hunters, it couldn't have been terrible if they finished it ?

If you build it they will come.......

Yeah, they weren't happy with the level of government support, so they put the project on ice a couple of years ago. They're now concentrating their offshore expertise on developing a site at the Thames estuary off the south-east coast of the UK. See www.greatergabbard.com. Due to be the biggest offshore wind development in the world - sounds familiar, doesn't it!

Eight weeks ago the minister announced a new tariff for offshore wind of 14c/kWh, which is fixed for 15 years. This is significantly higher than Airtricity's estimated cost of offshore wind of around 8c. Again, Ryan is sending the right signals to the market, and further offshore development is likely to ensue.

Of course, Airtricity was bought out by Scottish & Southern a few months ago, so it remains to be seen if the new owners share Eddie O'Connor's vision for the Arklow bank.

Both Arklow and Codling are likely to be firmly back on the map as the offshore industry is starting to get its act together
