You're guarantee is still valid as installing a new HDD doesn't invalidate your warranty. Major thumbs up to Sony there.

No because Sony specifically state that changing the HDD does not invalidate your warranty.

You dont void your warranty by replacing the hard drive , however I wouldnt be too keen to sell the old drive until the warranty is up ,

Simple reason is , if you do need to claim on your warranty and ship away your console , on the chance that it gets replaced , then your big hard drive is gone and you'll get a new one with the piddly little 40GB in it , I doubt very much Sony would accept a console under warranty without a hard drive , so keep the old one just in case , sell it when the warranty is up !

Its also a good backup to have , if something does go wrong you'll be able to switch back in the old one and rule out software issues!

    I got mine here....

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=343402

Just a word of warning, that the screws are like butter. Take care not to destroy one like i did , panic and then have to get a hacksaw to cut a groove in it to use a flathead screwdriver on it!

Make sure you have the correct screwdriver.
Apart from that, backup your files/saves/games to a external hard drive using the useful backup tool in the system menu (cant remember where exactly)

Install Drive and then restore backup.

    Full guide here....

And i would recommend keeping the old drive as if it does have to go back for repair or whatever and a replacemnet is needed then you lose you big hard drive

    Hi Sean,

    Thank you for your mail.

As for as I am aware should you need your console repaired you must replace
you original hard drive first. The exchange procedure involves us taking
your faulty console and replacing it with a refurbished model.

Should you have any other queries please do not hesitate to contact our

I would imagine the only reason they told you that is for the very same reason that another poster mentioned furthur up in this thread. Let's say you replace your 40GB/60GB with a big drive like a 250GB. Your Playstation becomes faulty and it gets shipped away. It comes back with a 40GB HDD and you'll be none too happy. You get onto Sony and they will say you should have had a 40GB or 60GB drive inside the unit.

They are only covering themselves from potential hassle where people forget to swap back the original drive.

Correct tools for the job lads and this wont happen , get the right size screwdriver and there will be no issues.
