Hostel newbie

I need to stay in Dublin overnight during the summer and I'm looking at the cheapest option which are hostels. I've never stayed in one before and am just wondering about how safe they are? I have a few basic/silly questions. For example where do you undress for bed and where do you put your clothes while you are sleeping?

Should I bring any items with me for storing my clothes like a backpack?

I've done a boards.ie search and found a website called hostelworld.com which seems pretty good.

Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience, any do's and don'ts? Thanks for any advice.

If you are concerned about undressing, etc. get a single room in a cheap b&b around gardiner st. or somewhere like that.

I've never stayed in a hostel in Dublin but have stayed in loads abroad so I assume theres no difference

They were always full of backpackers and in general safe

Most if not all have lockers so we just put our stuff in these and slept with the key under a pillow

Bring earplugs, was once sleeping near a fella who sounded like an airplane taking off when he snored

Sometimes there might be a chair in the room to just lay clothes on, otherwise you leave them under the bunk bed

Havent stayed in one in Dublin but have sayed in hostels around the rest of Ireland.

All have been generally very safe, left my gear bag just lying around the room in one with no problems. As CantGetNoSleep pointed out just throw your clothes in under the bunk (or at the foot of the bed) if lockers arent provided.

Hostelworld is a gand site i've used them a bunch of times myself, also Hostelz.com might be worth trying.

The best advise I can give is dont be shy and socialise with the others staying at the hostel. Some of the best nights out i've ever had have been with people from various hostels !
