Unable to connect wirelessly to my router

Oh My God. I'm going crazy.

Got NTL broadband last week. There are 2 XP machines and my vista (piece of c***) machine. My problem is that my laptop won't connect wirelessly to the router! The XP machines are fine though. I can only assume its a problem with vista (piece of c***). I can connect to the internet using LAN.

I've tried reseting and re-installing the router but it's no good. There is nothing wrong with my wireless connection as I can connect to any other network (including my neighbours who got NTL BB the same day as us!!) The router is supposidly compatible with vista.

I've tried contacting NTL but i was ferried around for over half an hour and then told that they'd call me back within 24-48 hrs.

    Any help much appreciated :)

Does your wireless have security enabled?

I'm no expert on networking so I'll confine myself to the little I do know !

It's unlikely to be a router problem as the XP machines connect ok . Does Vista see the network ? If so , are you using encryption ? If you are , make sure you are using the correct phrase/key for the correct encryption type on the Vista wireless application .

Run Command on one of the XPs and type ipconfig/all . Note the Default Gateway address (probably 192.168.1.1 ) .
Run Command on the Vista machine and type ping 192.168.1.1 or whatever the defaul gateway address is (it's the router address so will be the same for all machines on the network . Does it ping ok or is it timing out ? If it pings ok it could well be a firewall configuration problem .

Vista has been very good to me but maybe I take my computer skills for granted. I will admit it has been grumpy connecting to my current router at times but this thing is as old as wireless itself I think.

so you can connect to other wireless networks, yes? Are you connecting the XP machines wireless or over CAT-5 Ethernet cables?

Okay when you go into the Connect to a network dialog, can you see your wireless connection? Make sure in the dropdown box at the top you have selected show all/wireless connections. What pop-up occurs when you attempt to connect to the target network? What is the signal strength of the target network?

It shouldnt take much in terms of 'vista compatibility' for a router to work with Vista. As you say you can connect to other networks and ill bet my left shoe most of those routers you are connecting to successfully have been around a little longer than Vista.

However if your neighbour also had an identical service setup on the same day, this is a problem NTL will have to address.

    Cheers!!
It was a firewall problems. I had to allow a few things in the exceptions tab & it all works fine now. It must be a default for vista to not allow certain things as another vista machine was having the same problems.

Thanks again for all the help :)
