As per title. It's a Dell Inpsiron 6400 and is only about 3 months old. In the time I've had it, I have been extremely careful to keep it totally clean. There is virtually nothing running on it and certainly nothing that's heavy on processing. Anything that has been installed or downloaded has been placed in an appropriate directory. I don't have anything like limewire installed and have left the pr0n alone!

I noticed on Saturday while watching a DVD on the laptop that it was beginning to skip. Initially, this was happening only every so often but it quickly started getting worse to the point where it now happens every 45 seconds or so. Music is affected in the same manner. The skip isn't massive but it's enough to disrupt the flow for a second and is intensely irritating, especially when listening to music.

Is there anything I can do?

Is it music from a cd that you're listening to? Or mp3s stored on the laptop?

mp3s that are stored on the laptop. The DVD was on a disc.

Go to the control panel, and navigate into your sound device. Click 'properties' and you'll see an 'enhancements' tab. Disable all enhancements.

Hopefully that should sort you out. Its a well documented Vista problem, im surprised it hasnt been patched/fixed.

eek, I should have stated that I'm running XP.

I just realised that I just recently started using some old computer speakers. However, they were definitely ok for the fist while. When I go into control panel-->sounds & audio devices-->speaker settings-->advanced I get the option to choose what type of speakers (or headphones etc.) I'm using. Would this actually make any difference. I';; try now without the speakers anyway...

yeah it seems ok without the external speakers. That's a bit odd, no?

Have you checked Dell.com for the newest sound drivers?

try an alternate media player? I find WMP11 to be buggy as hell. Since you have the option as an XP Id honestly reccomend going back to WMP10: it was wonderfully stable and much more intuitive.
