Bike security during dua/tria-thlon

I just bought a new bike to do a bit of duathlon (i plan to get started with the duathlon series in Phoenix Park) & may be some tri as well.

How secure are the bikes during a duathlon/triathlon while competitors are running/swimming? do some people lock them?

Also, is there a special insurance that people get for the bikes? my house insurance includes bike cover but only up to €300.

    Cheers

there should be marshals during events who act as security for equipment.

My house insurance covers our bikes, kayaks and the like s long as we list each item that costs more than €1000.

I was wondering this myself and I assumed that these events would be relatively secure given the spirit that often surrounds these events and that if someone strange was lurking around the bikes etc they'd be well watched.

Personally I'll be enlisting the help of friends.

Bikes do get stolen from transitions, it hasn't happened to my knowledge in Ireland yet.

However I wouldn't worry too much as there are lots of bikes costing between 4 and 9k in transitions :)

lol yeah got to agree with tunney, there is always somebody with a better bike than yours...lol.. But i never worried about it, usually the transition area is flooded with marshalls. Although i doubt they would notice if a stranger took your bike. But during races, some race's only allow the athlete's into transition. You will have a wrist strap to identify the athlete's.

Thanks for your feedback. Good to know.

I take your point about more expensive bikes around.
But thieves don't only steel Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley and Aston Martin... they also steel Nissan Micra as they are easier to get rid off. I would think same applies to anything else.
I still paid a decent amount of money (at least for me) for a bike, so i would really be annoyed if it gets stolen during a race... but i would guess it could unfortunately happen hence my post.

I checked my house insurance policy.. Bike is covered as all risks item except during races.

FWIW I would say that you would be most vulnerable directly after a race - either by leaving it over-long in the transition area (some people have actually been known to drive half-way home before collecting their bike), or by hanging it on the back of a car and stopping for lunch on the way home.

Of course, you could always lock the bike while you are swimming and running ;)
