Leak in Apartment Hall Ceiling

Over the past while, we've had an occasional leak in the hallway of our apartment (on the 1st floor of a 4 story building). The landlord and the management company are currently arguing with each other over the issue. The apartment above has been checked and there appears to be no visible leaks.

Does anyone have any idea(s) of what would cause an occasional minor leak such as that? The only thing to do would appear to be to pull down the ceiling and see what is up there. (Yes, we could move, but it's a nice and relatively inexpensive apartment otherwise.)

    P.
