My wife is in the market for a new laptop.

It will be used primarily for college work, assignments etc. and wireless internet use. Looking for something that is light and very portable aswell.

Familiar with Windows XP and all the MS Office software so dont really want to change OS.
Is Vista a huge improvement over XP?

Unfortunately, another one of the main criteria is that it has to look pretty  So I think black might be out unless I can get her to cop-on.

I might end up using it a little bit for some on-line poker.

Dont want to spend a fortune either.

    Any ideas ?

ASUS 900 when it's out next month? Can't get much more lighter and portable and new one comes with XP. Plus it has "cuteness" factor. Plus will cost around 420 euros only...

As regards XP and Vista, for the typical user (especially of laptops actually, where having DX10 is less relevant), then the only difference between the two in day to day use will be that everything is a bit slower in Vista.

Massively disappointing OS is Vista, to the extent that MS are apparently rushing forward their next OS release, Windows 7. It really has turned into the Windows ME of its generation.

Like the price tag, but maybe something a little bigger. That size of a screen would turn her goz-eyed !!

Wait until summer, or the new college term. Lots of companies are producing laptops to compete with the Asus EEE around that time, with larger screens, proper hard disc drives etc.

+1 to that, i'd definitely want to see how things pan out of the next couple of months in the umpc market.

you never know. if she can get it to fit into her purse all the better :)

vista has some good improvements over XP. enough that when i have to use XP at work i find myself a little disappointed at the lack of flair and the fancy new startbar.
