Hi. I was in Dundrum today and was looking at a certain travel agents window. There were loads of special offers. One was for a week in April in Costa del Sol for €250. Great I thought, so I went in to ask when in April is this week. The girl said "it will probably come to about €350". I replied " but on the window it is €250, why is this"? She said "well that is the basic package, it will be around €350 including taxes"

Can someone tell me why purchasing a holiday should be any different to purchasing a Mars bar. Supermarkets dont price their products before taxes and charges, why should travel agents?

    Just Curious
    Thanks

Yeah that's something that annoys me as well, one of the reasons why I never go on package holidays - I always book my flights & hotels directly.

That realy drives me mad,I think its just to get you into the place and then they work on you.I try to book on line acco /flights myself, usualy works out cheaper

It's the same as the airlines! many of the travel agents would put plus taxes on the end of their adverts!

But it worked to their advantage - got you through the door!

If one travel agent advertised it at €250.00 and one down the road advertised it at €350.00 which one would you go into? Or if you didn't even bother going in just noticed it in the two shops you'd remember which one was 'cheaper'
Shops have to do that to attract. They are advertising the product at the correct cost but that cost is subject to taxes. Same way a car is advertised at a certain price and you've extras, printers quote you a certain price but you've VAT to add etc.
