Electrical safety - When DIY meets 'professional'...

    The short version...

Bought this house complete with its 3 year history in 2005 from the owner/'architect' who must have had 13 year-olds doing some of the labour (poor finishes and incomplete in some areas).

Anyhow, yesterday the utility room fuse started tripping and I had initially suspected that it was due to rain getting into an external lighting fitting, but I was wrong...

I did an inspection this morning and directly under the suspect lamp, I spotted a curled-up twin & earth behind a rock. Well, obviously the rock wasn't rated IP66, so over the time since the cable was pulled out of the wall by the sparks, the insulation broke down and water entered for the first time.

    This was what I found...

Note the burn-patch where the copper got blasted onto the paint in the second photo!

Anyhow, I got some IP66 rated rocks - oh sorry - 'enclosures' in B&Q and I'll install them when there is less chance of me being fried in the rain...

So, boys and girls, pros and semi-pros: Don't coil up mains cable behind a rock in the garden and just leave it there...

Ahh I see the problem, granite is not suitable as an IP66 rock as it is soluble in water, maybe it could be used under a canopy at a stretch, "marble" is a better bet for such joints.
