lads I'm going to give 5 examples of irish fighters and let everybody give their opinion on how much they earned in their last fight

    Bernard Dunne
    Michael Gomez
    Oisin Fagan
    Andrew Murray
    Andy Lee

I'm just trying to get an idea of how much the various levels of fighters earn

its an issue that comes up a lot and to be honest I dont really ever know.

I'll guess at what I think they got for their last fight - I'd be happily corrected

    BD - £65k
    MG - £5k
OF - I know what he got for his last fight so I'll say nothing
    AM - £10k
    AL - £150k

Get out of town! Alan Lee gets €150,000 per fight? Jesus I didn't think he was on that yet, hope he is, best of luck to the lad, in what region or cant you say what Fagan is on?!

belts mean little in terms of cash - they can ensure profile and sell a fight but really it depends on the crowd, venue and TV coverage

    when was that fight?

The lad is nowhere near to that yet. Dunne outearns him by a large chunk.

The main difference is that in a couple of years Andy Lee has the potential to be earning big paydays while Dunne is in about his peak earning wise at the moment.

Is that sterling or euro sigo bhoy?

Obviously there would be a lot more cash for a win? How much would the manager take?

How many full time proper pro's would there be in this country right now, i mean lads who dont work on the side?

Dont forget that before a pro boxer gets his hands on any cash he has to pay.....

    manager - anywhere from 20%-35% (usually 25)
    trainer - 10%
    licencing fees
training camp & sparring partners(if any)
    fitness coach / nutrition
& finally whats left gets the dreaded taxman treatment.....

Incorrect. The purses are decided beforehand. The result is immaterial, although obviously the more often you win the better your bargaining power for your next fight.

I think the figures quoted above are overestimations.
It's very, very hard to make any money at all boxing professionally, which is why if Bernard Dunne has made decent money I say more power to him, he's in a small minority.

there seems to be a lot of chat here but I'm still the only wan ta hazard a guess!

    Bernard Dunne against kiko €90K
    Michael Gomez £3k
Oisin Fagan $3-5K (20 boxers on the card Moore headlining this is why I came up with this figure)
    Andrew Murray €4k
    Andy Lee €15K-20K

    what u think sligo?

Well I wouldnt argue with any except the Lee figure. Maybe my 150k was toppie but 15k - not a chance. In his last fight he topped the bill at the Mohegan Sun Casino - thats got a 10k capacity which probably chops down to 8k to accomodate a ring etc - looked pretty full on TV so I'd 7k in attendance. What was the attendance in Mayo? 2k?

Also I could be wrong but the Lee fight was on HBO's "boxing after dark" which is their main friday night show - anyone care to hazard a guess as to the viewer ratings which the HBO show and the RTE show received?

I'd still say that Lee is on as much as Dunne.

Big fish little pond - little fish big pond.

420,000 watched Dunne win the european title and this reached a peak of 491,00

after dark has quite poor ratings in comparison and is on a cable channel which makes it even harder to see.but the total purse is rumored to be 500,000-600,00 between both fighters.

    .

But Dunne's prices were at least 5 times what Lee's were. Minimum.
    AM - £10k

As he fights almost exclusively on undercards I'd be inclined to knock a 0 off that fee

Andy Lee's biggest paydays have come in this country not in the States. He has yet to be involved in a fight where the combined purse for both fighters breaks or even comes close to 100k. The figure you said not a chance to, is a very realistic figure.

If he fought Vera for less than 50k then his team is as niave out of the ring then he was inside of it.

We are discussing the fee each had for their last fight. Lee was top of the bill against Vera. If Dunne is getting 5 x the fee Lee is then someone is getting ripped off because Lee drew a larger crowd and had a bigger TV audience.

As far as i know lee get a weekly wage from the contract he signed, so doesn't really matter what he got but i heard that a figre of 50 k for his fight in limerick , also dunne was making as much as the world champions at his weight last year some would say thats around 300k. I heard macklin only got 10k for his fight in stadium cause camps got the bigger bucks to come over.

Thats sounds logical - I could only see Lee getting so little if it was a set contract rate - however, I wouldnt be happy with that set up tbh

for what they do - especially some of the lower weights - the money really doesnt reflect what they do e.g. Rio Ferdinand on nearly £6m a year to ponce around on a football pitch.

Sorry, I was making the point that although Lee may have had 4 times the cowd Dunne had in Castlebar, Dunne's crowd would've paid more

I wasn't talking about TV money

He signed that contract when he first turn pro and last i think three years, also it was rumoured he got the biggest signing on fee of any the athens omlypians but that seem a bit strange to me.

you reckon they would have been paying four times as much? Me think Manny is making a killing on "our Andy"

He might be, but people aren't going to travel 100s miles to see him in the US, and he has to compete with 1000s of other fighters.

Here, Dunne is the big draw.

Do you think 8,000 Americans would pay $150 to see Lee? No chance

Why wouldnt yanks (or Irish American) travel to see Lee? Mohgan Sun is in Connecticut - very handy for both New York and also to a lesser extent Boston and in St. Patricks week!! Travel they did and I watched the fight and

I dont know what the average ticket price was but it cant be less than 50 dollars - that $400,000 on the door - now add in TV money - say $250,000 - and you tell me what the headline fight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,372 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Irish fighters have always had a huge following in the States and if they were really special, even huger.....It has been well known that a lot of fighters changed their names when fighting, to Irish sounding names, because it drew the crowds and ensured a following...

Here here sligobhoy - well said! Dunno where your man is reckoning his ticketprices there lol! Ringside seats that night were $500 and the lowest ticket price that night was $90 with one or two prices levels inbetween.
So yes, obviously people did turn up for the fight (because it look pretty full) and well there's no haggling on ticket prices so what the price was is what they paid for it !!
