Boards.ie Photography on Tour...

After some shallow discussions at a couple of boards meets, there has been a suggestion that instead of limiting ourself to the Emerald Isle, boards.ie/photography could venture outwards and paint some other place beautiful in Photoshop or on film, delete as preferred.

The deal is this: you sort out your own flights to the location. The expected time scale is sometime in September. We will probably hostel it and it is expected not to be a horrifically expensive weekend. We are thinking out Sat morning back Sunday evening depending on flight schedules.

So I'm issuing a poll to get a feel for where people might be interested in going. For practical reasons, the poll is limited to five options of which one, from a practical point of view, may be difficult.

It stays open for 7 days. Comments welcome. Comments such as "Why can't we go to..." might be entertained but probably won't be.

Oh yeah. Try to guess the preferences of elven, Calina and Fajitas! just for the sake of entertainment. I'm in that mood.

To start this off, I vote for Paris http://www.flickr.com/photos/rorywilliams/sets/72157602300988092/ as it is a city that I love visiting and never tire of visiting

It has a vast range of photographic opportunities ( I think it was Quilmore who posted some fab photos recently) that are too numerous to mention, it is a short flight away and is serviced by Aer Lingus (good for Calina !), Ryanair and Air France (City Jet). For those so madly inclined they could take the ferry and drive (and return with the car full of cheap french drink)

and if Paris is chosen I will offer to assist in organising it...

i second RoryW.. Paris is closer... probably not the cheapest but imagine the number of things around that be photo-taken... failing that Prague, Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam are ok too... in short i'll go anywhere if i am able to! :D

after all it is a boards.ie trip... should be fun and "dangerous"...

Paris has plenty of landmarks but in general is a **** city, being there twice hated it each time, pubs are brutal and it's as dear as fck.
Amsterdam was very good and I say this as a non hash head. :)

Yes but La Compagnie Anglaise des Thés is in Chatelet and I will be passing via there should RoryW's wish come true.

I happen to know Paris very well having lived there for a few months and being a regular visitor.

Amsterdam's canals are quite nice but the whole place has a sleazy vibe off it. Paris is pretty cool.

    heading there next weekend :)

Was the summer months actually. Loved it and occasionally think about going back but it's just too far from the sea.

They do do Paris Plage in the summer months when the banks of the Seine are converted into a beach scene with sand, palm trees and deck chairs http://goparis.about.com/od/picturesofparis/ig/Paris-Beach-in-Pictures/

dont think they do kite surfing though

I've been in Barcelona once, and Las Ramblas is fantastic for pictures...

Yeah I thought that was a great idea. Tried to think of anyone thinking of it here and failed.

I actually just surprised myself by voting for prague, although I'd be happy to go to paris. If we went to amsterdam, I'd suggest jumping on a train to haarlem, 20 minutes away - it's like amsterdam without the tourists, still gorgeous. it's where I started out in photography - where i gt my first camera - awww....

Cheap flights was one of the things we were counting on... that puts vegas out!

Cheap flights is one thing, but what about cheap hookers?

    Vegas +1

Venice is the only one I haven't been to.
    I've even been to Haarlem, but I don't share Elven's enthusiasm. :(
Spent too long in Amsterdam & have no desire to go back anytime soon.

Only been to Barcelona once though & that wasn't for photography.

Prague, the capitol of the country that gave the World two most recognized types of beer... :-)
    Guess my vote!
Not to mention that there'll be the World Press Photo exhibition from 19th September to 9 October. I know that it is at the end of the Summer, but it only means that there'll be only a little fewer tourists in the streets.

Been to most cities in Europe and my choices for return (all serviced cheaply from Dublin) would be Budapest , Naples and Lisbon in that order. City I've not been to thats on my list would be Hamburg.

Given that none of the above are options, I've gone for Venice:p

Think out Saturday back Sunday is a bit tight though:eek:

I'm not as well traveled as some, I'd be happy to go to any of them in September, but I can't see it happening, work, weddings, parties, family home from Oz........

As I was listening on Saturday to this conversation over the sports one I won't be guessing the places but I'm guessing venice could be expensive and smelly.

I'll have to go away and think about....

Prague is very beautiful, reasonably cheap and a bit exotic. There's wonderful architecture and beer to be had. And boats. Lots of boats.

After much consideration I chose Prague, as I haven't been there and subject to when it is and costs etc etc.

So much the see in Prague its nearly like camera overload both at night and during the day. City is easy to navigate and food is good too :)

Prague gets my vote too, all I need now is loads of money

Isn't there a church just outside of Prague where all the alters and light fittings are made of human bone, was all made during the black death apparently....would be morbid but would be interesting to see.

    [EDIT]
    This is it!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_Ossuary
very strange stuff...this is all made of human bone
    386px-Ossuaire_2.JPG

Its located in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutn%C3%A1_Hora, which is about 50km from Prague, the whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Voted for Prague but not fussy. Also planning myself to do a trip around Norfolk and Cambridgeshire just for a whole weekend based on photography. That might interest a few people too with places like Castle Acre, Ely Cathedral, Norwich Castle and The Broads.
